Question regarding first oil change

Someone reported on here that the oil filter is just above the oil level in the drain pan. So you should be able to change the oil filter without losing oil in the drain pan. You will need to top off the oil since you will lose the amount that was in the original oil filter.

 

Once anything has reached the filter -- it is in the filter .... it is not going to sneak out -- and you are not going to get enough to clog the filter. It was once quite common to change the filter every other oil change -- and actually still is with some power equipment. The oil is more of an issue than the filter. You will be very surprised how clean the oil is at 3k and 5k. But ...if you have any concerns just have the oil changed and enjoy the ride.

 

It still is the norm with Honda, though most dealerships ignore it: push filter replacement with every oil change.

 

The price of oil and the oil is cheap.

I do my own oil change at 3,500 mikes, which my car will reach at the 6 months service interval.

Then, I'll let the dealer do the one year change, which will probably occure in another 3-4 thousand miles.

Then, I will wait another year to let the dealer do the 24 month service at about 15,000 miles.

After thet, I'll de the yearly oil change, with oil and filter.

I just don't trust leaving the original oil for 8,000 miles, much less; 10,000.

 

Rude person's -- Obviously, do what you feel comfortable ... but the extended interval is well established ..... all should check the condition using the dipstick and change accordingly ..... Years ago everybody changed the coolant every year -- now no one thinks about it.

 

Oh I'm pretty sure that priuschat will establish a early coolant change interval soon enough...I mean it's just crazy to drive around with factory coolant for more than 25kmi, right?

 

Take a bath every Saturday Night, if you want to.

I prefer to shower, every day or even twice, if necessary.

Thae same thing goes with changing underwear.

Clean lasts longer.

 

You only shower once a day? that's freaking gross man. Do a swab of your underarms and send it for analysis...you may find that the daily showers interval that 99% of americans use is waaaay to long.

 

Each of the sides is correct in their own way for the reasons they use to justify it.

When just a filter is removed you will lose the oil in the filter and any that is in the plumbing above the filter. It isn't very much, it won't siphon any of the sump oil out with it, and it's a good halfway between the two warring factions.

My first car with an extended change was a 2000 Jaguar ---10k change intervals with regular 5w-30 .....per manual -- held 9qt -- but it was a 4lt supercharged V8 -- Never a problem and it went to about 100k before I got rid of it. This is nothing new and is well proven. I own three cars now that have change intervals of 10k -12k and 15k.
