I am selling my JBL MS-8 amplifier/sound processor. I've had it in a few days now, and I just don't like how fiddly it is. For the price, it doesn't seem to improve my sound that much. I know, what a testimonial, right?

Well maybe I'm doing it wrong. Plus the nav voice and iPhone noises sound weird. But I'm gonna pass it on to someone who will make better use of it. I've created a custom plug-in harness to install this in a GenIII. There's literally only 3 connections you have to make! I will tell you how to install it, how it's wired, and some of how to set it up, as well.

    Pictures coming soon

What does it do exactly? Might be interested...

It is a sound processor with time alignment (TA). It gives you a better stereo image. This particular unit has a built-in amp as well, for use with factory or entry-level speakers (to use the jargon, it has high- and low-level inputs and outputs). It takes the left and right, high and low channels from the factory JBL amp and removes the factory EQ curve. It also sums them into a fullwave signal. Then it sends the appropriate frequencies to appropriate channels with high- and low-pass filters (crossovers).

Costs $800 from Crutchfield. Asking $550 shipped obo. And this includes the custom harness which Crutchfield doesn't. Here's a stock photo of the unit. I will see if I can snap a couple pics in situ.

JBL amp not included of course...unless you pay me more and I'll go get myself another one. It's attached to the top of the MS-8 with Velcro. I will include the 12-gauge power/ground cable (not shown) that goes to the battery. It has integrated micro-blade fuse holder with 25A fuse. All connections were soldered and shrink-tubed, except for the power cable ends, which were heat-shrink crimp terminals.

First of all, I thought the stock JBL system was awesome to my ears. But by SQ standards, it is not. Also, I'm sure I probably don't know how to tune the system properly. It is proven to make cars in general sound better.

I bought the MS-8 awhile ago and have been dragging my feet installing it because I didn't want to start splicing wires, so I'd be very interested in hearing about the custom connector you created. Where did you get the components?

    Best regards,
    Mark

The wiring harness I started with was an SOT-911 harness made by Autoleads and sold in the UK. It has the two male and two female connectors required to plug in to the JBL amp and plugs. It cost about $70 on eBay and took a couple weeks to arrive. Trust me, you'll be doing a lot of splicing either way. But this way, you're not standing on your head and burning holes in the carpet.

What I have is PnP. Only thing you need to do is tap one wire of the JBL amp harness for turn-on with the ignition. And of course run power & ground to the battery in the back - I'm including that cable too.
