Can anyone give me a shopping list for the tools required to replace the 12v battery on a 2006 Prius (w/keyless entry)? I need to do a quick replacement before Hurricane Sandy hits and would really appreciate the help. I have pliers but no other repair tools. If anyone can point me to a YouTube video or other replacement instructions that would also be great. Thanks in advance !
have not done it myself, but can't imagine you would need more than coreect size open end wrench or sockets, screwdrivers and pliers.
....eLearnaid.com may have instruction for the Optima which would apply. I have from them for the (older Optima style): Tools needed: flat screw driver 10 mm wrnech or deep socket 10mm socket socket extender 12 mm wrench or socket 1/2 inch wrench or deep socket wire cutter hammer or rubber mallet vise, large crescent wrench or vise grips I don't recall using the vise but there are some bolts that are really tight, you need to persuade them. Basically you are going to give your Craftsman socket wrench a work out, and hopefully you own a set of metric sockets.
If you go to an AutoZone, most of them will loan you the tools needed to install the battery, especially if you purchase the battery from them.
I like the autozone idea......if u don't have the tools now & haven't needed them before & ur not a big DIYer......why buy the tools now? Just borrow them.
Thanks for the help all. Was able to borrow a socket wrench (metric) with extenders from a neighbor and it took about 45 minutes for the job. Got it installed and moved out of the way of a big tree with large dying limbs just before the winds started yesterday afternoon. The Prius works like a charm again and starts up without a hitch.
