Very interesting statistics. Let me report Japanese numbers. Code: Country Code  Pop.  Sales  Sales  Total  % Inc. Population per car       (2005)   04   05   Sales  04/05  2004   2005 Japan  JP  127,757  3,396  3,361  6,757 -1.03%  37.620  38.012 Ken@Japan
That can't be right, Ken. No way has Toyota only sold 7000 Priuses in Japan. And I'm pretty certain it must be more than 70000 but less than 700000.
Hi KMO, I believe the European number unit is in thousand(K) and for all passenger vehicles except "Population per car", so I follow same thing. Prius sold in Japan was 59,761 (2004) and 43,670 (2005). Ken@Japan
Sorry, I ought to have mentioned. only popultaion is / 1000, the rest, is units. The total Prius sold in the whole of Europe, is 27,022.
Okay, here are Ken's numbers corrected from his second post. (Where did his original sales numbers come from?). I've added US figures, from mrv's post on PriusOnline. Code: Country Code   Pop.   Sales  Sales  Total  % Inc.    Population per car.         (2005)   04    05  Sales  '04/'05    2004   2005   Total Japan  J    127757  59761  43670  103431   -26.93%   2.138   2.926   1.235 USA   USA   293655  53991  107897  161888   99.84%   5.439   2.722   1.814 Note that the European figures are basically aligned to the new 2004 Prius, as it came out right around the start of 2004. In the US and Japan it launched a bit earlier, so the "total sales" number for the USA, for example, doesn't include around 14,000 2004 Priuses sold in the last 3 months of 2003. Anyway, the figures clearly show that both Japan and the USA are big markets, and buy more Priuses per head of population than any country in Europe. Analysis coming up: In the Americans' case, this is because they're car-obsessed and seem to need about 4 cars per household, and you can't walk anywhere because there are no pavements, so they just buy a lot of cars generally. In the Japanese case, it's because they like buying really funky techy things from Japanese manufacturers, and they get through a lot of cars because they throw them away/exile them to Australia after 3 years. In Europe, we buy a sensible number of cars, and we're also quite happy driving diesels if we want efficiency, even if they sound like tractors, smell and give you cancer. We also prefer manual transmission cars.
Thank you for your correcting numbers. The thread title should be "Prius sales ...". My numbers are came from... http://www.jada.or.jp/contents/data/index.html if you can read Japanese. Anyway, my collected numbers in 2003 about Prius II for Japan and the US are... 14,742 in Japan and 13,694 in the US. I'm surprised at Japan is the most penetrated country, "Prius per Population". Japan is a very crowded country and well spreaded the train network, if you know Tokyo area, you can understand. We do not depend on a car for a daily use, typically in cities. Ken@Japan
There is another fact about Europe which does not concern USA and JAP. We have TDI's and cheaper diesel. The both combined makes the Prius less convinient than what available in the European market. Jst to let USA know, in Italy (& most of Europe) more than 50% of cars are diesel, and, in the Prius segment, this percentage rises up to 80%. Edit: 58.8% diesels sold in Italy in 2005.
