Great forum and great folks. I have spent last two weeks browsing through this forum and learned a lot. Thanks to all of you. Our eyes are on Prius v - Two. We've always had only used cars and this is first time we're buying a new one. I have a bunch of questions and I would appreciate your answers. 1. We have a Sienna 2002 LE with 120k miles on it which will be replaced by the Prius v. Is trade-in advisable? If I can get an additional $500 or more by selling it myself then I would like to avoid trade-in. 2. Will the the price for 2012 models drop soon assuming that Toyota might want to get rid of those models? 3. What is a good price for Prius v - trim Two (correct terminology?) including all charges and fees except for tax? 4. Will any dealer be able to upgrade to leather seats? What will be the approximate costs for leather and heated-leather? 5. Any other advice?
1) I believe you always get some more money by selling directly to a private party. If trading in to a dealer, they are 'middleman' and have to make money selling it again to consumer. Price it out using kelly blue book, NADA guides and such, look at market. Don't be afraid to advertise on Craigslist... I sold my 2 1/2 year old 2009 Prius using Craigslist for $18.5k in 3 days total time. Cashier's check is best payment, just call their institution with check number to verify they issued that check. 2) I've heard it's best to purchase near the end of the month. Of course they are going to want to sell the 2012 models first so they can get more allocation for the 2013's. 3) I think Prius v Two sticker price is in $27k range. The newspaper seems to put out teaser prices in low $25k range. I would think $25k before TTL wouldn't be horrible. 4) Maybe Toyota would install some brand of aftermarket leather before you take delivery. The Five OEMs material is 'Softex' which is a faux leather. Seat heaters? Got me.
Just an addition to 1. True, you get more by selling yourself but remember that you don't pay sales on trade so depending the value of your trade, that could be worth a lot. My trade in was 15k. I could have sold my car for 16 but I saved 8% tax on the 15k ($1200) and didn't have to worry about trying to sell it. This is NY so your state might be different. Just something else to think about.
I have a v Three and had Softex installed via the dealer but work done by a third party. I've heard of others getting the heated seats too. Where do you live as there might be a suggestion based on your location.
