I retrieved this nugget from a NASA e-mail SPAM trap: Source: e-mail found in SPAM trap The quality of NASA SPAM is sometimes so special. I've fixed one link and left the first alone. Of course you know what this means: Nobody has to file IRS tax forms this year! No more global warming! No more gun control! No more Dear Abby! President Obama will be out of office! Republicans will lose the House! Long live the new cockroach overlords! Later, Bob Wilson ps. Life is like a movie:
Just because you had Sandy, you got all North-Eastern bored with the 'end of the world.' <grins> Bob Wilson
Lost my power for a day and almost had a stroke pulling into the garage... "Good Gawd, is that racket coming from the car?!" The **** generator was on... Visions of that week without power, "Little House on the Prairie" showers and the generator belching fumes in through a window all came back... And an hour later when the power came back on I was rejoicing. Big rock? I'd love to not have to pay taxes this year!
Any rock that passes within the geostationary satellite ring has the potential to make news. In fact there are many of those, and moving plenty fast to disassemble satellites, but DA14 is biggish. In your runup celebration, don't miss this other asteroid event on 12 Feb: A Visit to Cupid for Valentine's Day
Hope they have enough significant figures in their calculations so their "soft-landing" occurs rather than a bug-splattering impact.
The 'Shoemaker probe' will hit Eros with substantial kinetic energy. The only thing we are likely to learn from that is the last few images on the way in. If Eros splinters or splits, that would open other areas of study. But don't bet too much on that It is a big rock and because it is spinning so fast we must suppose that it is quite sturdy. In no way has been this presented as a (possible) soft landing. Spidey, what have you been reading?
I took the high-risk path of ordering a new purse / tote from Saddleback Leather for my girlfriend for Valentine's Day. It looks like I won't have to worry about returning it if I chose poorly.
