Can you divert off the stream with a pipe that runs down the part with drop in such a way it will go back into the stream lower down, or is that a whole wrong direction?

Water is nice, it runs 24/7 with only seasonal variances. Always grab it's use when you can. I built a system and lived on it for twelve years.
Most of any hassles is if your in an area that bitter freezes.
