I am about to purchase the PIP in NJ and either ship it or drive back to CA. Was told by one of the dealers that this car cannot be registered in CA due to different emission requirements. I hope this is not true. Has anyone purchase this car in NJ area and register it in CA? Please share your experience. Thanks.
Its not true. Many here have bought cars from out-of-state and registered them in CA. All Prius are 50-state vehicles. It also says so on the window sticker. Lensovet also added it to the PiP FAQ sticky and in this post: Are we sure a car from MD is CARB Approved and Pass Smog in CA? | PriusChat
Would you look at that, a dealer who is simply clueless... Take note and unless that particular dealership is offering you one helluva deal, steer clear.
NJ is one of the CARB emission state. There are quite a few members who has done it from the NJ dealer I purchased mine. They can even work with you and ship it out to CA so you wont need to fly over for the purchase.
Thanks guys. The dealer that I'm buying from confirmed that I could register the car in CA. The other dealer which I was quoting the car from said he cannot not sell the car to me because of the above reason. I wasn't going to get the car from him anyway. Thanks for confirming this. I wish I would have known that I didn't have to be there for the purchase. We already bought the tickets so might as well use it. I would ship it back if I would buy another vehicle out of state in the future.
