I've heard that before, the suggestion that we're better off, overall, by playing in the dirt. The theory is that our immune systems need small doses of bad stuff to fight against, in order to fully develop and protect us later in life. I'm not sure it's wise to go so far as to rub dirt in open wounds, nor am I going to take up eating snot anytime soon, but the theory makes sense.
