I started my car after 2 days without use this evening and while still in park the engine kicked in and sounded much louder/rougher than usual and the car seemed to shake. I switched the engine off popped the bonnet and tried again and all seemed fine. I did notice a very slight pull at about 70mph as the engine kicked in the other day that was odd. I had an intermediate service at the dealer a week ago. Am I being paranoid or is this something that needs further investigation? Thanks in advance.
Without codes showing up, there is not much to say. What sort of service? Rough idle is quite often about worn spark plugs, or a dirty MAF/ throttle body, PCV valve, or a bad batch of petrol. It could also be the sensors in the exhaust pipe, but those usually turn on the check engine light if they are out. If the service people disconnected the 12V battery, there will be some relearning of the mixture by the ECU after the car is started again, but that should be done by now.
How many miles are on the vehicle ? When was the last time you serviced the spark plugs ? What did the service consist of ? Intermediate service means nothing to me, so I need to know what was done. It could be any number of issue's. If the MIL didn't come on, it's probably not a big deal. Sitting for two day with a rough start could be a time related issue. Most time related issue's involve a leak and the 2 biggest leak factors are coolant and fuel. A head gasket that leaks coolant into the cylinder can cause this type of issue. Did you see any white smoke after it ran for a little while ? Are you noticing any coolant loss or leaks ? Fuel injectors can leak past the pintle seal and cause this problem too. Look for black smoke after start up of the ICE. Injectors are the most common cause of this type of problem. The only way to test for injector leaks are by watching long term and short term fuel trims. If the PCM is removing fuel it's a good possibility you could have a leaking injector(s) The only way to verify this without taking it apart would be to pressure cycle the system when cold a few times. This builds up pump pressure and would make the injector(s) leak at a faster rate. Watch the misfire PID's and look for the problem cylinder(s). If you see misfires on certain cylinders, you'll know which injectors are the probable cause. Then you can pull the rail and do a drip test to verify the problem child(s) Sounds like fun, huh
It needs further investigation. Do you have a gen2 or the later gen3 as 2009 was the year when they changed over. Has the oil been over filled? What are your mpg's like? Double check your tyre pressures. The shake is reported on the gen3 usually after the car has been stood for a few days in damp conditions. It can be fixed by replacing a manifold, but it's only happened to me 3 times in 80,000 miles so I haven't bothered. If the car is noisier then it sounds like they've used 0w20 oil instead of 5w30 oil. This should give smoother transitions and much improved fuel economy, assuming you have a gen3. Few more details about your car and symptoms are required.
It's a gen 2 40k miles. Note sure if/when plugs were last replaced. In the uk toyota offer 3 types of service. Intermediate, full and full+ (but I assume that's the same all over the world). Intermediate Service Free Visual Safety Report Free Wash and Vac Check all pedal(s) and component(s) Check steering wheel Check horn Check washers Check wipers Check interior lights Check exterior lights Check warning lights Inspect air conditioning filter - replace as necessary* Check seat belts Drain engine oil Replace oil filter Inspect air filters Refill engine oil Check levels and refill as required Inspect suspension Inspect steering Inspect tyres Inspect wheels Check and adjust tyre pressures Inspect brake pads and discs Torque tighten wheel nuts Check radiator and condenser Check belts Check battery Recheck for fluid leaks- underside and engine bay Recheck all levels Reset service lights or monitor as required *Additional charges apply if work is required I'm not going to do much driving till after the bank holiday but I will report the problem to the garage and see if it does it again.
Take it back and get them to check it. Which dealer did you use? I've taken my car back in the past and they've always been accommodating. Maybe give them a ring this morning and tell them your concerns to get the ball rolling. They may get you to pop over if their service dept is open today.
Check the oil level to make sure it is not over full. This is a known problem with the Prius. John (Britprius)
Pandalover, If you look carefully at the full service against the intermediate you will find the only difference is in a load of safety checks. All of these checks and more are done in our MOT only in greater depth. I do mean all. I never have the full service done and have the MOT done a few days before the my service (intermediate), otherwise you pay for the same thing twice. I always check the engine and cabin air filters before the service and change them if required. This takes minutes and you save a lot of money on dealer prices. I also tell the dealer not to change the fob battery as my dealer charges £5 for a fob battery "I can buy 5 branded batteries for £1". The only reason I have services done at the dealer is to keep a full set of service stamps in the book. An intermediate service is £129. A full service is £199 An MOT at the dealer is £54.85. I get it done at my local mot station for £30. John (Britprius)
