Since the gasoline consumption is not obvious in non-hybrids, I suspect that most people are totally unaware that they are idling away their cost savings in the long Costco lines. Not to mention the gasoline used if one drives miles out of one's way to get to a Costco or other cheap station. All they see is the the lower price on the pump.
