Can anyone that has recently registered their 2013 Prius in CO give me an idea of what I might be paying for plates?
Sounds about right for a new car. Also there has been a new tax on plugins following the lead from the other bozo states of an additional $50 if you have a plug.
Yeah, I got this badly worded letter from the state saying that they would add $50 to my plug-in unless I returned the form saying my car wasn't a plug-in. It's not. I'll be looking at my renewal closely to see if they actually get that done. It's a sad state of affairs that I assume a high probability of them getting this tax wrong. Yes, $500 is a lot of $$. I assume this has to do with new-purchase taxes, although I must admit I'm not clear on this. My 1998 Subaru cost $71 to renew the registration.
Yes we got 4 of those stupid letters. 1 household, but 4 individual letters, so 4 times the opportunity for them to screw up and charge us anyways. It is tempting me to go buy a plugin just because. Although, I had heard that the fee was supposed to be used for free HOV access (there is only 1 in the whole state in Denver on the way to Boulder right???), EV charger networks, and things like that. My guess is it will be used for something completely unrelated and we will get 1 charger in the boonies to compliment our 1 HOV lane that is closed half the day.
Glad to see other CO owners on here =) Registration is a rip off, but at least we pay some of the lowest gas prices in the country
$50 per plug-in to pay for infrastructure is a ridiculous plan. That will barely pay for the tax collection overhead. How much did that letter cost? Not $50, but they are getting $0 from me, and I got the letter. Wild numbers here, but if there are 4M adults in CO, maybe 3M cars, 300k hybrids (very generous guess, but we're pretty environmental in these parts), 30k plug-ins (no idea of that percentage)? If every hybrid owner got the letter (I assume they did), we're looking at 300k letters and a revenue of $1.5M over one year. Hope they can send a letter and process the responses for less than $5, but I'm finding that hard to believe. And even if they don't blow it all on admin, what will $1.5M buy? A mile of HOV lane?
