I was trying to describe to a friend how to best drive the Prius. I told him that I imagine I'm piloting Apollo 11 and have a finite amount of controlled 'burns'. When you activate the burn, the duration and the start and end points are all critical. What does everyone else think? Do the skills carryover?
Applies more to a Prius Plug In driver trying to max out EV range. For me, once out of EV mode, moderate speed is my only concern.
One could look at it that way. From the wider perspective it was short on intended results and long on drama.
That's admittedly a great analogy. But many would debate whether that is actually "The Best Way" to drive a Prius, or is it the most annoying way to drive a Prius? Keep in mind that Apollo 11 was in trouble and was just trying to get home on limited fuel. On the highway? Well "Houston We Have A Problem" because you are surrounded by other rocket ships, loaded with fuel that just want to burn their way back into the atmosphere. I think it's a great way to describe an aspect of hypermiling and pulse and glide technique, but bottom line for me? I don't want to drive my vehicle like it's the Apollo 11 limping home. But just for fun, tell your friend you also have to scrub the Cabin Air Filter to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions into the vehicle cabin. And next time you pick him up or visit.....wear a complete Astronaut Costume. Roll around on the front lawn and remove your helmet and scream "Splash Down!". I'd keep the whole thing going as long as possible.
