This is like the show "Shark Tank" the ball is now in your court. You've been giving a lot of good advice here. Now, what say you? Do you have the guts to stand your ground or will you cave and give them the extra $400?
For me this is not about guts but about making a decision I can stand by. A little clarification on the numbers: -$17,940 asking price -17, 500 dealer offer -$17,000 my offer -dealer refused to come down further or throw anything in for free -My final offer is $17,300, and they eat their $170 doc fee (net cost $17,130) I just sent my final offer via email. I'll update if there's news. Thanks to everyone for the great advice and conversation.
It's not sold locally? sight unseen? warranty would be an issue with a vehicle that far away. Most people buy from dealerships to have someone to bring the car back to when there's a problem....otherwise they would save money by buying from a private party? It would be hard to bring it back if there is a problem you discover later.
I wish I could find it from a private party at this price. The only warrany is the remaining factory warranty.
what was I thinking, this car only has 22,000 miles. You are good for another 14,000. Any Toyota dealer can address problems for you......
To negotiate successfully you must give the dealer some reason to reduce their price. Look in a local ad in your area with a similar car, priced around the same. Email this information to the Lexus dealer and tell them you are debating on his car and the one in the ad. You can easily buy the one in the local ad and save the flight to pick up his car and call it a day. However that will put in motion in him thinking you are going to walk and buy something different. That will be a motivation factor in itself. Just don't show how desperate you are......
I found the exact same car listed at $16,900 with 19K miles and just a 2 hour drive from my home. I started the negotiation by comparing the two and asking them to beat that price. From the get go he said the other dealership had him beat. Unbeknownst to him, the one for $16.9 has hail damage and isn't an option - but you can't tell from the website. The dealership I'm working with bought the car in September and it's been on their lot since early October. If they don't take my final offer they either don't care when it moves or have too much in it.
This one you are looking at really sounds like a bargain, even you've done your research on the cars in your area. You seem like you've purchased a car before and know exactly how the game is played and what you are up against. Looking at everything, I believe even his asking price is quite fair because you still have 14000 mile warranty remaining on the car. If anything, I would insist on not paying the doc fees. I just don't like the fact that you are flying there. Maybe this car has hail damage that's not mentioned? You won't know until you see for yourself. They will tell you it's in perfect condition because that's what they do. Once you fly there, you are obligated to buy or you would have to fly back (more money). I recently had a friend who purchased a new 4runner. I negotiated the price for him and settled on $34000 OTD. I drove my friend to the dealership and left him thinking all is done. At the finance dept, they told him there was an alarm system that was $600. It can't be taken off that day if he didn't want it. Short story, he was stranded and forced to pay the $600 because the dealer knew I left him already. Those dealers are quite sly....
The response is in: Following up on your offer I did present it and the absolute best that we can do is $17,500 Our state requires us to collect a documentation fee of $164.30 and $10 for a drive away sticker. There is a balance of factory warranty left on this vehicle 16 months or 13,000 miles left on the basic warranty 40 months or 37,000 miles left on the powertrain. Extended warranty is available. Tires are at 5/32 or 40% tread Cargo cover is not in the vehicle. We would have to contact the previous owner to see if they have it. The car is safe to sell however it is not a new vehicle. There are a few scratches on body panels that the previous owner touched up on a few panels. No dings as we can see, no tears in the seat. I understand if this may not meet your requirements but I wanted to give you as best of a description possible.
Didn't know you were that far from the vehicle. I would never by a car sight unseen. You'll be pressured to buy because now you've wasted $200 or more on flight tickets. My advice to you is to walk away from this deal, don't be in such a hurry, something will come along in your area, you need to be patient. There's always another deal around the corner.
This is why I suggested you do the negotiations according to OTD pricing. You could care less what fees are required if the OTD price matches what you are willing to pay. If you base your negotiations on simply sale price of the car, there are other fees they are "required" to tack on....here they claim it's a "state" requirement. I don't know how sensitive you are towards scratches that are touched up....some touch ups are quite ugly. I bought a car for my mom that had touch up on it....it wasn't all that pretty, however my mom doesn't care so I didn't care because the price was right. If you are not desperate, I would walk away. In 1 weeks time, go at it again and maybe you'll get a different person to assist you. Preferably a fleet manager that doesn't work off commission but instead off sales volume for his bonuses. You also might get lucky and they will call you back in 2 to 3 days if they need to move the car at the price you want.
The only thing I'm desperate for is a good price. I'm in a 12 year old Honda Accord with only 135K on the odometer so there's no rush. There are too many things here that bother me. The price is good, yes...but the tires are past half their usable life, it obviously has scratches that were worth covering up and the cargo cover is missing. That's enough to tell me the previous owner did not share my scrupulous habits with cars. I'm definitely walking away from this one. This forum is a fantastic resource. Thanks to everyone who participated in this thread.
There are always good deals to be had, sometimes better than what you thought was a good deal when you bought your car. My 2010 five I just bought was $15000 with 59,000 miles. It was perfect with all records and a bonus dent in the fender. I paid to get the fender fixed and a few scratches buffed out for $1000, total cost $16000 for a car that is worth $20000 at the dealerships. I thought that was a great deal. However I looked recently and found a different seller selling one that's the same for $16000 with 77,000 miles but in perfect condition and extended warranty to 100k miles. Although I thought mine was a super deal, I wouldn't mind getting the 77,000 miles one with the warranty for the same $16000. And I know that one didn't have the fender fixed. So just hang in there, I'm sure you'll find something quite similar if not better.
This 2010 model was actually purchased in 2009. The car is 4 years old with 59,000 miles, around the 15000 mile mark per year. I would put on about the same each year. At this rate, my hybrid battery would go the entire 10 years 150,000 miles before the warranty would go out.
Johnnee, this sounds fishy to me... If I were going to trade-in, I won't bother to touch up, because I would be taking a big loss anyway... I don't think cosmetic paint touch-up could make a big difference in trade-ins...
