I have a 2011 prius with just a regular stereo and no amplifier. the sound in the speakers go off when putting the volume up, however if I umplug the front speaker connector to the stereo the sound will work fine on the back speaker but once I plug that connector back the sound goes off. the sound to the speakers work fine with the Bluetooth.
To clarify, your signature shows a 2011 Prius Model Five, then you have the JBL sound system which does have the amplifier. Nav was the optional part. Look under the front seats.
thank you for the reply; I looked under the seat but there is really nothing there; I have made some research and the car comes with a 6 speaker wich has no amplifiers. is there anything else you may think is cuasing it? here is the VIN for the car JTDKN3DU2B1408375
Are you sure you have a level 5 Prius? What you describe is a level 2 sound system. I am no expert, but far from new. This almost sounds like your head unit is the issue, if it is the base level radio. frodoz Stereo Upgrade | PriusChat
Do your search. The biggest give away is the LED Headlights. Leather interior and upgraded stereo should be, but also on level 4 and 3, although level 3 would be port or dealer installed leather. No sun roof on level 5.

OK then it's a level 3 or 4. there is nothing special about it. I forgot to mention that I have purchase the same stereo but it's acting the same way as the old one
Did you change your stock speakers at some point in time? Sounds like you have a phase issue (incorrect wiring) Either that, or a short. When you turn the volume up, the headunit puts out more power and if it detects a short, it goes into protect mode and shuts down the channel.
thank you for the respond; nothing has been changed on this car, but I suspected a short somewhere though. is there a better way to find where the short is? and is it usually in the connectors between the stereo and the speaker? this is really a clean car.
In your original post, you said that the sound on the rear speakers work fine when you unplug the front speakers and then disappears when you plug the front speakers again. It sounds like you're tapping the wrong wires. How are you disconnecting the wires? (where are you accessing them?) and what was the reason you're disconnecting these wires? Is it to upgrade the speakers? The stock HU has 4 channels... are you using all of them independently?
I have removed the stereo for the dashoard and disconnect the wires from the back of the stereo, I have the wiring diagrams of the radio, the back speakers have different connectors then the front speakers so when i start the car, the stereo works fine and can hear the front and the back speakers then when i put the volume up the sound stops. if the back speaker only are connected this problem will not happens, but if the front connector is connected then the problem occur. i have thought may be the problem is in the stereo (internal amplifier) so i bought another same one when i plugged it the same problem occurred.
Assuming then you have 2 speakers in the back and 4 in the front, you have a Level II Trim Prius. You know the problem is in the front speaker circuit, so take your prints and a meter to isolate. If this is something your not comfortable with, take your prints to a competent Stereo Installer and they should be able to isolate this real fast. Tried to upload my 2010 print here as reference although pin assignment is likely different, but it says the file is to big. A few things have changed here since this site was updated a while back. Let us know what you find.
thank you much for the reply; I thought so too; I havent ripped off the door cover yet to get tot he speakers but I will do this soon; I do have the wiring diagrams for the wiring circuit, thank for trying to upload the prints.
