I have been going through this data from CR every year or two and am always quite pleased how the Prius (and family) stack up, so here's the latest installment. Not in any way scientific or complete, just a random sampling of vehicles and a rough attempt to break them into categories to compare to the c, liftback, and v. I'm sure there are plenty missing, some unfair comparisons, and crossover between categories. Enjoy. Cost is based on 8 years depreciation, so residual value after 8 years would be subtracted out. Looks like 12k miles per year is assumed. Also includes insurance, maintenance and expected repairs.
...I wonder how many miles/yr USA drivers average? Some places use 12000 and others uses 15000. We personally are closer to 15000 in our Prius but 6000 in our minivan so we are <11000 mile/yr average per vehicle for 2 people.
around 45,000 in the prius and around 10,000 in our RX400H and around 3,000 in our E350. Im sure the prius is a special case but only 3 drivers thanks for the data op In scheduled maintenance did you factor in tires
The numbers are reasonable, unlike the TCO from Edmunds.com where they calculate cost of Prius IV as $42,226, but only in 5 years. 2013 Toyota Prius 1.8L 4-cyl. Hybrid CVT Automatic True Cost to Own
Here are miles driven by sex and age of driver, the average of everyone is 13,476 but you should drill down. It is even tougher when guessing miles per vehicle, my guess is a prius will do more miles per year than most cars. Average Annual Miles per Driver by Age Group
Our household is pretty much on target per the chart. Hope they population weighted the averages. Yes we need to know how many vehicles the miles are going onto.
