I just received the hid plug n play kit from TRS and I need advice on the install. It is the 5000k h11b with 35w elite ballast and a CANBUS.My dad, who cosigned on my 2014 Prius Two a I bought a month ago ,thinks I'm too big of an idiot to install the kit.He wants me a get the local Toyota dealership to install it.They told me another Prius owner had them install hids and the headlights went out a month later (I'm thinking a $35 eBay special). When I called the local stereo, rim etc shop about the install , they said that I needed them to fabricate a relay to go all the way back to the battery in the trunk. They said the CANBUS only told the cars computer that the headlights were in. I called Zack at TRS and he told me the CANBUS also had a resister that would keep the hids from shorting out and that a relay that went back to the battery would void my Toyota warranty. Does anyone I've talked to know what they're talking about?
Welcome to Priuschat. You don't need to wire to the battery. There is a place to hookup in the engine fuse box. I don't believe you needed the CANBUS version for the Prius. Since you aren't doing a complete retrofit (i.e. splitting the housing and putting in new projectors), the install is pretty simple. Here are some threads that explain the process: xenonsupply.com - H.I.D. kit. Your best be is an aftermarket shop. Add your location to your profile and someone may know a local shop that can help.
I'm in Boaz Alabama, basically between Birmingham and Huntsville, as its an hour away to either one.I will call TRS and see if they'll send me a relay to go to the fuse box.
I just talked to Carlos at TRS. He said to use the CANBUS because the relay wouldn't reach the battery and the"loops"wouldn't work on the fusebox
Have you read through the threads I linked to? The TRS guys are super nice and try to be helpful, but I have struggled to get competent responses from them at times. @sfv41901 is probably the resident guru on the topic. Hopefully he can chime in on the CANBUS relay.
You don't need to get a relay. It is more of a want than a need. I just installed the morimoto kit in my plug in and I only used the canbus. Follow the steps in those links provided above and you'll be fine. It is a really simple install.
