5,500 miles per year? You didn't do a lot of driving.

Life's too short to not drive something you enjoy, if it's possible. And putting that few miles per year on a vehicle? You could probably choose anything and be OK.

 

one wreck per year indicates hummer requirement. or tank.

 

To each his own but consider taking a new Avalon for a test drive. I have a 2014 Avalon Hybrid XLE Touring. I like it for a lot of reasons.

For the price of the Prius C, there isn't much out there that won't feel "cheap". As far as mpg, most regular 4 cyl cars can get around 35mpg. Good luck with your search

if i was looking for a compact 20k vehicle, i think i'd look at yaris/matrix/civic/etc. but i don't think i could ever leave the prius.

 

FYI, if you are moving to Hawaii, you will do well driving a hybrid vehicle.

That is, if you are coming to Oahu.

The speed limits are low (60 max), and there is bad traffic (congestion and construction) almost everywhere you go. You will be glad for the Start/Stop ICE and regen braking. I have a Scangauge in my Camry, and I can see my average mpg numbers dropping steadily every time I'm sitting at a traffic light, or stuck in stop and go traffic, wishing I was driving the Prius. Or thinking I should've bought a hybrid Camry.

Still, I do pretty good mpg wise (my Fuelly numbers are in my sig), but that's mainly because I work evenings and avoid major traffic, and most of our commute is freeway driving.

Pehaps you should be taking the taxi or getting a Leaf. No, with a wreck every 5500 miles you need to abandon vehicles of your own. Perhaps a bike or mototor scooter. no, not good either.
give up driving vehicles yourself and only be driven by others.

 

Traditionally, "wreck" means upside down, jaws of life required, or air bags blown and front bumper cozying up to the firewall.

 

It's true 5500 miles per year is not really going to justify a hybrid on fuel savings. Prius liftback provides unqiue combo of room + efficiency + practicality for families so can justifiy the extra price on other things. Prius c fills a need for smaller Prius which is a real winner in some cases, but smaller portion of the US market than the liftback.

 

The Prius C is cheap. That's why it feels cheap. Anything in that price range is going to feel cheap. I also blew $62,000 on a Lexus NX300. Also a Toyota hybrid. There's nothing about it that feels cheap ;-)

 

Moving to Hawaii... I'd get a Miata and call it good.

 

5500 miles a year means your single trip is short enough that the engine never fully warmed up and therefore resulting in poor mpg. This is one of the rare occasions where the more you drive, the more gas you'll save.

 

^ That's never true, lol. If you're low mileage, you're ultimately making a lot less trips to the gas station, even if you're doing it more inefficiently. And there's low mileage strategies: trip consolidation for one: if you've got several car chores, try to do them on the same day as much as practical.
