My wife and I are planning to take our prius cross country from San Diego to New York City and back. This will be our first time doing this. Road trip will be in December and January will have about 3 weeks. Is this enough time? My car is an 06 with about 80k miles..will probably have 85k by the time December comes. Anyone have any good routes and places we can stop by. I'm expecting we will hit snow during our trip. How does the prius handle winter/snow conditions. Do we need tire chains/snow tires?
Sounds like fun. Yes you will need chains. If you are a triple a member, you can go there and they'll help route you to all the scenic destinations
In Google maps, type San Diego, CA; then Augusta, GA then New York, NY This route should be least snowy. America's Scenic Byways Kitt Peak Visitor Center & Museum: Planning Your Trip
You could retrace Bobby Troupe's route when he graduated from Univ of Pennsylvania and headed for California. When he got to California, he handed Nat King Cole a song called Get Your Kicks on Rt 66. But he went through Chicago. How about head for Wash DC and see some monuments and go up Rt 95 to NYC...its not pretty but we do it a lot. Did JC say chains?
If your 06 is like my 08 was you won't be able to drive it in the snow and ice. Spend the money for the chains on a rental!!! My traction control was so touchy I traded it for a 2010!!
"Four Corners" is a joke. Avoid. See: Yellow Stone, Mount Rushmore, Missouri Arch, Washington DC (lots of free museums), NYC, Niagara Falls (daytime, nighttime, Cave of Wind Tour). If you have a laptop, consider getting Microsoft Streets & Trips w/ GPS. Useful for route changes, things to see/do, etc.
That is my neighborhood LOL I have never bothered to visit the monument, but Shiprock is fascinating if you are a geology buff, and Mesa Verde (MV) is a beautiful area settled by the Anazasi native Americans. I agree -- winter is not the ideal time to be a tourist.
