I'm hoping that one of you learned technical gurus can help with this problem. In summary, the following occurs: 1. Car performs as per normal. Removing the key from ignition slot, open the drivers door to exit - no alarms sound. 2. After some time, go through the same motions but when key is removed and drivers door is opened, the key in ignition alarm sounds sporadically 3. Some time further, going through the same process, the alarm sounds every time I remove the ignition key and open the door. 4. Shortly after, no power in starter battery and cannot unlock doors or boot. 5. Toyota people look blankly when I try to explain. They take the car, charge the battery, tell me they cannot find any power drain, tell me that what I hear is the door open alarm and we start the process all over. This has been ongoing for some months. I would appreciate any assistance.
Do you have a smart key with SKS system? Maybe you can avoid using the key slot, that may be an issue.
have you changed the remote battery? is the 12v battery original? I would want to make sure those are both good.
My first guess would be that the switch that determines whether or not the key is in the slot, has gone bad. Not being a GenII owner, I'm not sufficiently familiar with that slot system. Is there a switch tab inside to be jiggled for testing, or is not extending properly when the fob is removed? Can the car be improperly started with the fob adjacent to, but not actually seated in, the slot?

methinks you need a new 12 volt battery. don't go by how many you've put in or how old they are, test it. it could be a battery connexion as well, especially negative to body connexion.
