Err, looks like you have to pony up cash to get out of your present vehicle, what about a down payment for the new one? Err, audiophile and Bluetooth never belong in the same anything.
On the contrary! I find the bluetooth in the Gen3 to be very clear. Whereas the 3.5mm jack in my Gen2 has always had an annoying "buzzing" feedback noise (there IS a TSB about this, but Im far out of warranty). I agree about having the itch at a bad time - tax season. That doesnt negate the fact that the car is actually at a good price, given it is a CPO with low miles. Toyota CPO's come with 12 month/12,000 mile B2B warranty, and an extended 7 year/100k mile powertrain warranty. Thats nice! In comparison, in 2012 I paid $13,980 for my 2007 - it was 5 years old with 54,000 miles. It is now 2015, and a 2013 is going for $16,700 with 34,000 miles. It is 2 years old. I know I have described this before, but my 2007 has 97,000 miles on it and in 3,000 miles I will be due for some maintenance. I also need new summer tires. My windshield is cracked and needs to be fixed before I get a ticket. I also have a big dent that is going to start rusting soon that needs to be repaired. Summer tires $400+ Windshield $300+ 100k Maintenance $500+ Big Dent $550 So sink $1700 into my 2007 that is at/sinking market value once it hits 100k miles and the battery warranty expires, or hurry up and trade it while basically cutting even and getting something 6 years newer with 60,000 less miles AND warranties. Also I really like the look of the newer Gen3's and it gives me something to mod . No big maintenance aside from oil changes for a long time, and a brand new set of Ecopias to boot! The decision is made up in my mind.
When retiring some don't get a chance. Contributing enough to get the entire company match in a 401(k) is a no-brainer. The Roth IRA contribution should also be maxed out. The Prius was in higher demand in 2012 because the average gasoline price was $3.637 peaking at $4.147. Compare that to 2015's range of $2.539 falling to $2.264. It's a good time to buy a Prius but a bad time to sell one. If you don't negotiate the purchase and the trade separately you will get screwed on both.
Did they offer you "good" condition blue book range for the trade or the normal going rate of auction price which is around "poor" condition aka a couple thousand less than good book value. I think if they paid off what you currently owe on your 2007 that's slightly above good book value which I think is pretty good. Unless they inflated your trade and are overcharging you on the 2013, I haven't looked up values on the 13's recently though to compare. I think when I traded in my 2013 liftback trim level 3 after about a yr of ownership which I bought brand new they gave me 18k or something to that effect. Miliage was around 10k or so, they prob tacked on 3-4k and put it out on the lot hoping to make a quick couple gran on the low milage less than a yr old car. I couldn't believe how much the car devalued in one year...
Nope! The sign hanging from the rear view mirror on the 2013 was $17,100; I got them down to $16,700. I am going to work on getting that down to $16,200 Monday - if they wont budge, I will walk. There is no inflation of prices. There IS a doc fee of $200, which seems pretty normal for my region. And if I can get another $500 off the price of the car, Im not terribly butthurt over the doc fee. They are giving me payoff for my 2007, and I dont know why.... its NOT in excellent condition, I'd rate it Fair, IMO. There is a 12" deep dent/scratch on the drivers side fender and drivers side door that will need to be repaired, its starting to rust the door and fender almost rub from it. My summer tires are just about down to the wear bars (They dont know that yet, they havent seen them- I have my winter tires on right now but I have told them this), my windshield suffered major damage last fall when a tree branch fell on my car during a storm, literally poking a hole in the upper left corner of the windshield and spiderwebbing it, and the car generally needs a very very good detailing because of the Michigan salty winter we've had. Hey if they are going to pay it off , who am I to argue? This seems to me, a good opportunity to get rid of the 2007. This way I dont have to replace the windshield, have the dent fixed (Toyota wanted $1500 to repair, indy repair shops want $5-$600), I dont have to buy new tires ($400+) and I can avoid the 100k mile maintenance which I am 3000 miles away from.
I agree, seems like you are working on a pretty darn good deal. I'd say go for it for all the reasons you mentioned. I didn't see that you mentioned the miliage on the 2013, trim level 2 right? good carfax?? What color is it? Pics? Honestly if I didn't get the Persona this go around I was gonna get the trim level 2, as the 15's now have back up cam standard and the only thing I really wanted was satalite radio which could have been installed aftermarket on the cheap and saving a couple grand over the 3 or what I got now. Like you said and I agree the nav is nothing special, it works but a nice Garmin Is better and a lot cheaper than upgrading to a trim level 3 with nav.
It has 34,000 miles and has a clean carfax and yes, its a Prius 2. Black in color. I dont have any pics yet, they said they "just" received it on their lot and its not on the website yet. IF I get the Prius 2, I plan on adding backup camera & Sirius. I can take the Sirius I installed in my 2007 out and into the 2013. I will also remove my engine block heater in the 2007 and see if I cant use it in the 2013. And of course, the icing on the cake- adding heated seats!
We'll heck I'd jump all over that then as long as the car is as described. It is prob an early lease turn in with those miles. You have not seen it in person yet it seems? Head over mon, take a good look at it and test drive it, put a deposit to hold it until your bank loan clears. Good luck and in hope the cars is as clean as they say it is.
Not only did I see it in person today, but I test-drove it for about a good half hour. It was very nice, I was super impressed.
Silly me, I just re read where you stated that. Sorry. I guess when you said you had no pics I assumed you haven't seen it yet. I always take a bunch of pics whenever I go and look at cars. lol. --look up and get some "liquid Glass" (amazon) It makes black cars looks insanely shiny and nice and for a long stretch too, added bonus is that it protects the paint in the winter if you do a couple coats.
So... reviving my thread. Would you trade your 2007 Level 5 with 97500 miles which needs tires, a windshield and cooling system maintenance in 3000 miles for a 2013 "Certified Pre-Owned" Prius II? Heres the car Ive been eyeing, and the Dealer is willing to go down on the price $500 (So sale price $16,700). I have seen the car in person and it is in impeccable condition. What happened to the black Prius 2 with less miles that you test drove and liked? The one you linked is the rental car one per the carfax.
I waffled on it and it sold. Quick too. I looked at it Saturday around 1:30pm, and by 4pm, somebody bought it. It was a really nice Prius at a very good market price, and also certified pre-owned. Yeah, I realize this one is a rental also but it is, afterall, Certified Pre-Owned as well. They dont just certify any ol' car.... so Im not really worried about it. I have decided that if I can find the "right Prius", even if it was an ex-rental, I will buy it inasmuch as it is certified by Toyota. I also did much research about buying an ex-rental and it seems that (these days) its a non-issue as the service they receive is above and beyond anything the average consumer would do. The Prius I posted yesterday was one I also looked at last Saturday. I like that grey color. The salesman said the price has some flex too, so I was considering offering $16,000 as a starting negotiating point. EDIT: I just checked the ad, and they lowered the price!
That's a shame that the black one sold, that's why I suggested getting over there and putting a deposit on it. Oh well the search continues and is half the fun. Below Is the safe for work rental car vid, but for the real winners Just go to YouTube and search for "rental car abuse" and or "why you don't buy a rental car", spend some time watching those videos and report back here pls. Not to discourage you or anything.... I mean honestly you can't really jam the gears or randomly pull the E break on the prius or smoke the tires so that leaves the possible abuse to simply driving it hard and reckless... You might be ok...
Good god! I'm sure no one would ever do that to a Prius though. I'm currently shopping for a used non-Prius for my son. Focusing on 1-owner cars by seller with traceable service records. I'm not saying it's foolproof nor does it guarantee anything but I think it reduces my risk if I can talk to the owner and understand how he/she may have taken care of their car. If there's a premium to pay in time, effort or price in doing this, I'm good with it. My goal is to avoid getting stuck with someone's abandoned problems.
Right now car loans are sub-sub-prime, and everybody is getting their income tax checks back (Nat average for federal returns is over $3K.) Bad time to buy. I'd roll your car for another few months and wait for the sellers to get hungry again. Next time you "negotiate" with the dealer? Tell them you don't pay for doc fees. The bottom line price that you negotiate is an "out the door" price, or you go.....out the door. I like G3s better than G2s, but I'm still staying in your present G2, DIY'ing the 100K maintenance, ignoring the dent, and driving it until it's paid for if it were me. Trading a car that you're upside down in, for another car that you'll be further upside down in sounds like what I did in my 20's. .....I did lots of stupid stuff in my 20s. Good Luck! Send pix!
I went to look at the 2013 ex-rental car and as I was pulling in, what do I see?? A shiny GEN3 that was just added to the used lot!!! It is NOT an ex-rental and is also certified (Turns out, this dealership seems to sell only Toyota certified used Prius's). Score! IF everything goes as planned, I will post pictures tonight
Just got home in my silver 2012 Prius II So far, I LOVE IT. Much nicer ride all around. Pictures and minutia to come.... I havent eaten since 11am and I am going out to dinner first my better half!
