As the title says I wonder if I should do State Inspection & Emission only with a dealer. In a haste I got them done by an independent shop (Monro Muffler) and I'm really worried if that was a bad decision. There are cautions on this forum on leaving Prius with non-dealers for service as they can cause damages but I couldn't find anything on inspection and emission.
No problem with independent shops doing inspections and emission testing. They drive it in a bay and perform 10-15 minutes of testing. In most I go to there is a viewing window where you can watch the techs perform the testing.
In the two states I do them in, cost is the same at lube place or dealers. So I use whoever is convenient. Depends on the car and it's warranty status. I even did the state and emissions for a Porsche at a lube place under my watchful eye.
i have my local mech do it. i drive it in, he puts it on the reader for a couple minutes, slaps a sticker on it, i give him $29. and i'm on my way.
Only potential advantage I can see to dealers is all records would be in one place for future sale. But emissions/safety inspections aren't nearly as important as mechanical maintenance.
I'm pretty sure that there are more problems reported here with DEALERS service visits than from independent shops. You worry WAY too much.
