I'm pretty sure with the warranty sold through Toyota, warrantied repairs must be done at an authorized Toyota repair facility, most likely a dealership. In CA there are authorized Toyota Service and Parts Centers that aren't dealerships.

I meant scheduled maintenance, not repairs. In other words, could the extended warranty be, at least in part, a ploy to tie you to the dealership for routine maintenance, oil changes, etcetera?

Makes sense. And would you really want to have your hybrid worked on at the Mexicali Pep Boys anyway?

I finally purchased the 8/100,000 platinum warranty from a Dealership in Baltimore, Maryland, cost was $1495 best price I could find. I have a 2012 now out of original warranty. Considering this was the first year of production and statistically more likely to have problems in a car with enormous complexity, electronics galore which are influenced by environmental factors.
