I picked up my 2012 Prius Plug-In Advanced model back on April 24, 2012! I received my Safety Connect expiration on March 14, 2015 and renewed it on April 10, 2015. The services through it, namely Charge Management (and the e-mail notification of charge start/completion), Charging Station Map, ECO Dashboard, Remote Climate, and Vehicle Finder are all working great. Finally today, my XM Data services which provides the Information apps Traffic Incidents, XM Fuel Prices, XM Sports, XM Stocks, XM NavWeather, as well as the XM NavTraffic data stopped working today. If I try to use one of those Info Apps, I get a "An active XM subscription is needed for this service." From reading previous threads, the 3-year complimentary XM Data subscription is supposed to be controlled and ordered through Entune instead of directly with XM; however when I called Entune support, they told me that I need to contact XM to renew the XM Data services now that the three year complimentary period has expired. On the My Entune Account Management page under Features, it just says this: Data Services This vehicle supports XM Data Services including NavTraffic™, NavWeather™, Fuel, and Sports & Stocks. Access to XM Data Services is complimentary for three years. Have any of you guys renewed your XM Data Services on the Advanced Plug-In after the three year period? How did you do it, and who did you do it with? Thank you!
Yep, originally everything was managed through Entune. But some time (I think in 2103), Toyota detached the XM data service and now tell you to go directly through Sirius/XM for that. This was the same time that they stopped charging for the non-Advanced Entune apps. My XM-dependent apps "expired" at the end of March (I purchased PiP in March 2012). I just went to the account management page on the siriusxm web site and signed up for the data services. You tell it what kind of car you have (Prius Plug-in Advanced), so it knows which services to offer to you. Pretty much instantly after hit the purchase button, the apps on the car "woke up". One can also call their customer service number, but I think using the Web page avoids confusion about which of the services you want. You can get any or all of Traffic (overlays on the map display), Weather, and the other miscellaneous stuff, like gas price, sports scores. Good luck.
I thought they stop charging for the data from there little money making scheme. So they are back to charging again? What are we paying for if not wanting the XM?
Sirius/XM has always charged for their data services, but Toyota bought a 3-year data subscription on behalf of the Advanced owners. This is separate from the XM audio channels. What changed was that Toyota no longer charges for the ordinary Entune Apps such as Bing and Pandora and OpenTable, which was kind of ridiculous to begin with, since they didn't really provide any value-added, since the car owner provides the Internet connection via their smartphone. Things work differently on the base model. There, the traffic and weather service is provided by the owner's smartphone data connection. Toyota also stopped charging for this when it stopped charging for the other apps. But Advanced owners are still on the hook to XM for the traffic/weather/sports/stock apps.
Okay, thanks for clearing that up. So paying more for the Advanced model forces us to pay a subscription while the base model get those for free. Thanks Toyota.
There is a tradeoff here. Either you you have a self-contained system with a subscription fee to Sirius/XM, or you are required to have an iOS or Android smartphone running the somewhat flakey Entune app and using data from the smartphone's data plan.
Based on the lack of currency of the XM traffic data (significantly lags behind reality and Google Maps), I think I'd like the base model design more.
I thought that the advanced PiP could use either XM or Entune/smart phone for traffic & weather information.
Hmmm... I have the ~Advanced navigation plus Technology Package in Canada, with no Entune support. (I hear not having Entune is actually a good thing though otherwise.) The car is 2.5 years old, but I have no XM. I have XM support though. How in Canada does the XM contract work with the PiP?
There is no "Traffic and Weather" app in my Entune for my '14 Advanced/Tech. XM or nothing. (Well, Google Maps on my Note 4 for when I need ACCURATE traffic.)
I thought Sirius/XM merged a while ago but apparently they did some database merge (with plans and stuff) at the end of April. At this point in time, they have no traffic data plan for the Prius because I couldn't renew on that plan.
We have to be careful here to distinguish what is available in Canada and what is available in the U.S, since it is not exactly the same. In April, I added the NavTraffic® and NavWeather™ SiriusXM Travel Link® "Infotainment" services to my XM account for the radio in my PiP. From their perspective, this was a new subscription, since I was replacing the expired data subscription that Toyota had provided under their name. I still see the same "Infotainment" plans on the SiriusXM web site, under the page specific to the "2012 Prius Plug-in". It is true that if one wants up-to-the-minute data using up-to-date maps, that a smartphone app such as Google Maps is the only way to go.
Maybe someone can help me understand the facts when it comes to Entune, XM and the different JBL audio units ? I just traded up my 2010 level 3 Prius for a 2013 Level 4 with 14k miles this one comes with Solar roof and heads up display First I'm trying to figure out exactly which Head unit i have after registering on Entune with my vin the site says I have Premium HDD Navigation I thought the JBL Premium HDD units have the 7inch display mine is only 6.1 Anyone confirm what actual head unit this is ? I posted a picture below of it to help I get it that the unit updates the apps thought my phone but is there a way to update the core Entune program itself and what would the latest version be ? Also the Entune site says Access to XM Data Services is complimentary for three years The inception date from first owner was 02/17/2014 not bad .
The button layout in your picture is identical that that in my 2012 Advanced PiP, which is the JBL Premium HDD unit. And the Sirius/XM data services indeed expired after three years. Updating the core software is something done by the dealer over the USB port. (Assuming you can find a tech who has any idea what you are talking about.)
Thanks for your reply Have you been able to find someone to update your Entune if so is the latest version ?
How about this for traffic (backup when you forgot your Note 4); Press the INFO/APPS button on the faceplate Touch Traffic Incidents From Toyota website after selecting your model, year, and head unit; NavTraffic There is also information about HD radio data being used for weather and traffic; Why is Toyota using HD Data for Traffic and Weather? With HD Data 15, Toyota drivers will be able to receive Traffic and Weather data services without a subscription. HD Traffic Data 15 is available in the top 100 US metros (and growing) in the US., covering a road network of over 225,000 miles. And, with a paired and registered App Suite-enabled smartphone, customers can continue to receive Traffic information when the vehicle is out of HD Data 15 range, via their cellular connections. When the Entune 8 system utilizes the customer's smartphone to provide traffic information to the vehicle, the customer is responsible for cellular data charges that incur.
I just called Toyota Entune, and they told me that the change to use HD data only applies to newer models (2014/2015), and I am stuck with paying Sirius/XM for traffic info on my 2012. Even though when I specify "2012" on the above web site, it says "uses HD data". Edit: I just looked on my car, and and the built-in traffic apps definitely won't work without XM (I am in a parking garage and thus it couldn't find the satellite signal). If they changed from using XM to HD Radio, then this will require an update to the base software in the Nav unit, which can only be done at a dealership. BTW, the Setup/Software Update screen shows Navigation: V6673500, Bluetooth 21.210. I *think* that this is the relevant software component. Note that we are not talking about the Entune apps that run on your smartphone, such as Pandora and OpenTable; we are talking about the Traffic/Travel apps on the Nav unit, such as the traffic overlay on the map and gas prices
