Just picked up a used 2011 Gen III yesterday. It felt good during the test drive but today I took it for a good ride and all I could focus on was the road noise and overall roughness of the ride. Tread looks good on the tires. Just looking for other's insight before I decide to go out and purchase some new tires.
Yes, my 2010 Prius came with the yokohama Avids, they were noisy and short lived (25000 miles). I replaced them with Goodyear Fuel max tires, the lower road noise and smoother ride was very noticable. I have 30,000 on the Goodyears and still have 50% tread.
My 2010 came with the Avid S33D and they still had some usable tread after 52K miles, but I replaced them with Michelin Defenders anyway (with alleged 90K tread life.) Can't say if I've noticed any significant change in road noise between the two sets. As always, YMMV.
the prius is a fairly noisy car, depending on what you are currently driving. i wouldn't buy one hoping tyres will solve the problem.
The Gen II I traded in wasn't the quietest car but it was quieter than my Gen III lol. I'm looking at some projects now and may look into the sound dampening mods people are using here.
sorry, i though you were a newbie. you might want to move to michelin energy savers or something else recommended here as well. all the best.
I can vouch for adding damping mats to the body panels (doors and rear quarter panels). I just applied a product called FatMat Rattletrap and it makes the car sound and feel much tighter. The bumps seem less harsh when you don't hear them as much.
