Hey everyone, I've had my prius for 18 months now, it has 267,000 miles. in january i replaced my hv battery at 238,000 miles due to the fact it had lowered battery capacity, and that i got a great deal on a used hv battery from a wrecked 08 Prius. Well ever since I've owned this car the exhaust vent tube coming from the battery that vents hot air out to the passenger side rear finder is missing. Should i look in to finding that part. like is it even worth it? I guess I'm just trying to plan for the long run with this newer battery. It kinda makes me wonder how long that part has been missing, like how many years?? or if that could have possibly affected my previous battery capacity, since being subject to soaking in heat isn't good for the battery. What do y'all think? Thanks everyone
I would definitely get one. I would probably try to find one from a salvage yard or off a wrecked car. No telling what Toyota would want for it.
That's what I think too. It has an optima battery that seems pretty old (judging by the dust, and performance, about 12.3 volts nowdays)
I'm still kicking my self for not buying the one out of the wrecked out.. I wasn't even thinking about it. They probably would have given it too me free aswell I think I will start looking for one now
Is it true then gen 3 got rid of this tube? Maybe I'm wrong, but if so that would seem very odd of toyota
On 3rd, there's tight ductwork from inlet to fan to battery, and on the far side just a short duct dumps air into the underfloor air pocket: from there on its just open. There's flap equipped air outlets at both back corners.
I misunderstood your OP. You are referring to the duct that routes hot air from the traction battery to the area where the 12V battery is located - not the duct that provides air from the passenger compartment. The absence of that duct probably will slightly impair battery cooling, to the extent that a small vacuum is created when the car is in motion and can help suck air out of the exhaust duct. It probably is not the end of the world to have that duct missing though.
Thanks guys! I guess I'll look for one at some local salvage yards. I like to think I'm keeping my battery cool as possible
If you do find it, try to get the fastener's at the same time. In the end, the car should look like this.
Have a little ghetto fun and fab your own out of, say, cardboard and duct tape... I agree with Dr. Wong, and lean even more in the direction of thinking that thing has little to no effect on battery temp.
I agree. The only time it might actually make a difference is on a long road trip, because of long running time it could possible warm up everything under there after hours of warm air blowing around under the cargo floor. Still not too big of a deal
Strange, 3rd gen has dispensed with that exit duct, just dumps the air and counts on it to meander across the space and out the two exit ducts. Whenever the battery fan's running there's increased air pressure, to make this happen.
Odd. Some taxi drivers seem to think thats why the gen 3 battery doesn't last as long as a gen 2 taxi. Who knows!
