can anyone help on the skill needed to change the oil pan gasket on my prius , some what skilled and have the tools , car stands , etc search for a vid, but know luck, thanks to all frank
Mine had to be replaced once while still under warranty. It took the dealership 5 hours to do it. Last month during routine servicing they said that it will need to be replaced again soon. They quoted me $1200 to do it. My Prius is not losing enough oil to measure any loss.
Should be no different than any other car: 1 - Drain oil (replace oil filter while your at it) 2 - Remove oil pan bolts/Remove oil pan 3 - Remove old gasket (thoroughly clean both surfaces) 4 - Install new gasket (use recommended gasket sealant, if any) 5 - Replace oil pan 6 - Install oil pan bolts to proper torque spec (don't know what it is for your model year - use alternating tightening pattern) 7 - Replace oil drain plug with new gasket to proper torque spec 8 - Fill with recommended amount of oil 9 - Run engine and check for leaks
RR, that first statement is very true, but prius guy said silicone stuff would haft to dry, would rtv red work or is this something like the light bulbs a few years back, 100$ for the bulb and 300$ labor. 1-9 is perfect but scared of the silicone stuff or gasket the prius guy talk about, 3 hours to dry???? thanks frank
i never saw it on my '04, 08', and current, funny that forest beekeeper is looking at his second one.
If it takes 3 hours to dry, it takes 3 hours to dry. If that's what the directions say, follow the directions, and factor in the extra time it takes. Might as well do it right...
I think the idea is you apply the sealant and reassemble everything, leave it to set up for several hours, and then torque everything to spec to get a good seal on the pan.
Seems pretty straightforward. One hour labour, two at the most. There's no mention of waiting for sealant to set up, in fact they say to assemble within 3 minutes of applying sealant. The car should sit for a couple of hours post-install. Obviously an oil change too, lol. From the Repair Manual:
That might explain why it took them 5 hours the last time, 3 of them were waiting to cure. But they want to charge me for the full 5 hours of bay fees.
