Hello everyone i need some adivce here . Im looking to buy my boss 2006 toyota prius package 8 with all the bells navi leather seats back up camera sat bluetooth hid headlights.and more to list .the car was purchased by my boss in may of 2012 as a salvage tittle and got it with 65k miles ,and he has had no problems only changed the 12v battery and done routine oil changes . Now the vehicle is 90k miles and he is asking $6000 dollars ,he let me take the car home and my wife and i been driving it for quite a while my wife took it to work and she likes it drives strong and is giving us 43-45mpg .i wonder if its a good deal considering is a package 8 and all ,but my concern is that hybrid battery going bad all of a sudden ? Im only planing on keeping the car for maybe a year to save on gas and money and sell for a newer model in a near future. Please honest advice from experienced salvage prius owners or someone with knoledge on resale in a short period of time ect .thanks ...
Selling a salvage car will be pretty difficult. I wouldn't get it unless you're planning to keep it for a long time.
you might be better off looking around for a lower package, at least as a comparison. if money is tight, it will pay to shop. if nothing else, for the education. if a 2006 package II is similar or lower, you'd probably be better off.
It's nearly impossible to sell a salvage car for any reasonable value. Also I would question the mileage on the car, as there's no regulation once the car gets a salvage title. Anything could've been replaced when it got the salvage title, engine, battery, odometer, anything
I dont veleive the milage was changed since the tittle shows the milage when sold also a carfax report shows the milage ..the car runs good i would just want to make sure id be getting my money back whe. Selling it in a year or less ,im not really looking into making a profit ..
Given that statement, I would say absolutely not. Not even a consideration. Hybrid vehicles with 100K-ish miles drop significantly in value -- based mostly on buyer ignorance. People are scared to death of having to replace a hybrid battery. Any vehicle with a salvage title drops significantly in value. This car will have both strikes against it when you go to sell it. You'll have a $3000 - $4000 car on your hands at that time. Personally, I think it's a $4500 car right now. Just my 2 cents... arguably worth that.
If you wanted a good car, get it, hunt up a new hybrid battery, forget about resale, drive it like ya stole it.
I agree. That's a $4500 car. And only way to get any return on that would be to drive it till the wheels fall off. And yes having to buy a new Hybrid battery is of most concern. That's about $2000. My only question is what kind of hit did it take? But having said all that being that its your boss trumps any of the above. There's a much bigger picture here. If you love the job and want to stay there for long time buy the car and give him what he wants. He sounds like a real nice guy letting you use the car. There's some $$$ right there. And tell the boss you love it & thanks alot no matter what happens to the car lol. This will ingratiate you to the boss which in most jobs is extremely important. Good jobs that you like are really really hard to find. Anything that goes wrong with the car we can help you out.
You're buying a car with no warranty that is going to be a bugger to sell. As mentioned, the only way this works is if you plan on keeping it "forever" and can do the repairs yourself. You aren't just buying from a coworker. You're buying from your boss. How are you going to feel next week when you are stuck with a major repair and how do you intend to handle it? If the car's so good why is he selling? I don't see gas significantly increasing in price by the time you intend to sell so you are going to take a loss on the car. Don't go fishing off the company pier. Tell him, thank you, no.
How will i get a vehicle with warranty for 6k? i could go ahead and buy a prius from the toyota dealer pre owned for well over 15k then agin im paying about half .. And ive seen a few reconditioned batteries go for $500 with one year warranty.. I might manage to get the price to $5k now is that still a bad buy ?
Big consideration in my mind is "salvage title." If you do not plan on re-selling in the future then it is a go. $4,500 would probably be about the right number. The issue is when you go to re-sell this vehicle you will then get a real education on what someone else will be willing to pay for a "salvage title." Good luck with whatever your decision is.
You don't want reconditioned batteries, with new batteries, the car is good for 150,000 miles, or find a different car
big difference in prices geographically. you really need to look around your buying area for proper comparison.
I purchase 2005 Prius for my wife clean title one Owener level 6 trim 97 k miles 3000 cash .low gas prices equal low demand buyers market not sellers all car need was new tires
There are alot of prius non salvage with over 180k miles going for 8-6.5k And salvaged going for 8-7k with higher miles and not even regestered .. source craigslist san diego and autotrader san diego ..
My rule for salvage cars is that I would pay no more than half the KBB value. In this case, that would put the car in the $4k range, in my estimation. If you truly only want to hold onto this car for a year or so, I would recommend buying a lower package model that isn't a salvage. You'll lose much less to depreciation (~$1k+). If you enjoy this particular car enough to make it last, I would consider buying it for $5k and driving it till it's not worth driving any more (likely MANY miles down the road). That would ultimately be my recommended course of action. $5k for a good salvage that will probably go another 100k like nothing, that's my kind of car.
