Dear Folks , The prius alpha i own has this rattling noise when the steering is turned left or right . A local mechanic advised to lubricate the opening on the top of shocks , I couldn't find the Lube spray by Liquor Moli or 3M liquid Grease .I tried a spray by WD-40 Specialist Water Resistant Silicone Lubricant, but no result . I have this Grease (attached pic).(desperate measure) Shall i apply this ? And how ? thanks
Check the shock tube appearance for leaks, but the chattering is more likely a case of (take your choice of) worn sway/stabilizer bar bushings or links, worn tie rod ends, worn steering shaft/intermediate shaft bushing,
"Assuming" the problem is the shock/strut mounts, greasing them up will not fix the problem. The key is to first definitively isolate where the noise is coming from before addressing it.
As suggested, first isolate the noise source. Have an associate listen while you work the steering and suspension , or vice versa. A number of 'usual suspects'/likely noise sources appear above. Based on the source, different mitigation approaches apply. From your sig, are you hearing this noise on a 2015? If so, task your dealer with warranty work.
