I just saw this: People probably know about that already but just to "spread the word" I'm posting this here too. I read that putting your key in a aluminium foil can prevent this but I never tested it so can't confirm.
Of course we have car theft in Luxembourg, why wouldn't it be here? Just that Prius here is more like a medium to low class car. You can see more of Maybach, Jaguar, Lambo, Ferrari from the top "shelf" here and they are more under the threat of being stolen. Besides I keep my car in a locked garage with barely any space to got into the car :-D
I wish! Can you imagine? Germans on the East, French and Belgians on the West so facing west you get a Baguette in your gut, meat balls in your face and a Schnitzel in the bum :-D
yeah, i always believed the "smart key" was an incredible dumb (and unsafe) idea only appealing for lazy drivers. why using and expensive and conspicuous tow truck while you can use a $20 range extender to steal every car.
(1): The system described here previously allows them only to unlock the doors to pilfer the contents of a Prius, not start the car. If they are now starting the ignition too, that is a new step. (2): This attack, as previously described, works only when the fob is within its natural transmitting range to the car. The 'range extender' works only one way, car-to-fob. (3): SKS can be turned off via MFD menus on my 2012, defeating this attack. I shut it off to help preserve an aged 12V battery in an airport parking lot during a 6 week trip. This shutoff path may not be available on 2010-11 models. (If I recall correctly, the fob Lock / Unlock buttons still work when SKS is disabled.)
