Problem: I'm in Nashville TN for personal business and need to return to Huntsville AL. The solution sets: total cost time method 1 $150=$125+$25 2.5 hrs = 1.5 hrs + 0.25 hr (rental) + 0.25 hr (taxi) Hertz rental from the airport requires drop-off at the Huntsville airport. A taxi ride will be required to get home. 2 $135 1.75 hrs = 1.5 hrs + 0.25 hr (Uber delay) Uber only it randomly cover 1st and 2nd shift 3 $64= $44+$20 6 hr = 6.0 hrs + 0.0 hr (taxi) Grayhound bus wait 5 hr to 1 AM arrival with taxi waiting at terminal when the bus arrived. I had planned the Greyhound approach. It takes longer but thanks to free WiFi and chargers, the wait time in the bus terminal was no burden. However, you have to be comfortable sharing a large room with poor people, a similar mix found in any hospital emergency room. These are the same people I spent four years with in the Marine Corps. While approaching Huntsville in the last 20 minutes, I could not rouse an Uber driver after midnight. So I called a reliable, 24x7 cab company telling them I was 'on the bus and had just passed Rideout Road.' The cab was at the bus terminal when I arrived and we drove directly to my home, $16 fare and I told him to keep the $20. The only thing not tried were the ride-share, non-Uber options. Given there was a wide range of how long my business might take, 0.25-3.0 hrs, that approach did not make a lot of sense. I needed to get home and not go into another negotiation. Bob Wilson
If you will be doing things like this very often, check with car rental companies that will "pick you up at home".......or in the case given, will let you stop by their lot, pick up one of their people who will then take you home and take the car back with him. Been renting cars off and on for maybe 40 years and never have used Hertz......for various reasons, mostly price. Lately have leaned toward Enterprise.
My parent's don't know about this, but back when I was a teen, girlfriends and myself used to hitch into Portland all the time. Two, three little blondes, blithely unaware of the risks...or maybe we subconsciously did know... Never any trouble. God smiles on fools and.... Hmm. Yes, it might be too dangerous for Bob.
