I like Rain-X but it wears off fast. A Google search reveals two alternatives: Aquapel Neverwet I want something for the rear window of our Prius Prime Plus but also the backup camera lens. Has anyone used either? The YouTube videos suggest Aquapel for glass and Neverwet for opaque surfaces. Bob Wilson
I cannot speak directly, so call this hearsay. I needed some waterproofing for a pair of my daughter's fashion boots. The local shoe store has changed ownership and I don't particularly like the new family that has taken it over -- and they no longer stock the Meltonian shoe treatment I have used for years. So, went to the local family hardware store. They have begun carrying a whole line of Rustoleum's Neverwet products and they sung the virtues of Neverwet, saying that they have had lots of positive reports. So, I bought the product for shoes and boots. It works fine. Don't know how that translates to your issue, though.
I get the impression "Neverwet" is not designed for glass but a surface treatment for opaque things. If you've got the instructions, do they mention using on any optical surface? Bob Wilson
Bob, just looked at mine and all it talks about is shoes, boots, leather, etc. BUT they do make specific glass products. Asked about those at the hardware store and got positive feedback. Again, have not tried myself. Jumped to the Rustoleum web site and they have both a glass cleaner and a glass treatement...they recommend you use both, of course. This lasts longer than Rain-x, Aquapel etc. It's made by optimum polymer Technologies, their car sealant and no rinse products are second to none. I find the rain droplets don't fly off as easily at lower speeds like a first day coat of Rain-x using it, but it outlasts rain-x and other products by many many many months. Just be sure to properly prep the glass surface before applying. Then a few years back I tried optimum's glass sealant and it is all I use. It is pricey but if you get it with a coupon code on autogeek it helps and since it lasts so long, the bottle will last you a few years on two cars.
I vaguely remember reading that you can't use RAIN-X on plastic surfaces - which is what I would assume a backup camera lens is. Also, the lower rear window on a standard PRIUS (not sure about a PRIME). I won't guarantee though - just something in some of the back-room grey-cells.
My rememberances are the same from M/C days.... My Rain-x treatments are limited to buying the more expensive green windshield washer fluid, rather than the blue stuff - but I'm thinking that manually applied Neverwet will come in a container festooned with extra-small print detailing use.
I applied it last night and my initial impressions are positive. There were a few places that I didn't buff down but a single swipe of the wipers cleared them up. The biggest thing, it is a very slippery surface as wet, air-dry clothes slid off. I did the BMW i3-REx first and will do the Prime next. Bob Wilson
