why replace a filter that can just be tapped clean and ran under gentle water to clean as good as new? Seems like I read somewhere if your gonna do that.. try not to run the air until its dry or you could tear it.
I think you are right unless it really gets full of crud. Maybe a new one every few years and just clean it between times?

I tried to clean the old filter with compressed air which just blew the bugs out. I then washed it with Fantastic and put it back in the car to dry out. It is made of pretty tough stuff, no problem with tearing it. Don't think I will be buying new filters anymore.
