I refilled mine again and watched it closely this time..... the odo on the mfd resets back to 0.0 miles...but the average stays the same and continues unless you hit reset.... I guess that way it gives you the choice.
I own a red, 2006 Prius, delivered on 1/4/06. The manual states that the avg. mpg and mileage on the MFD will automatically reset if more than 2.6 gallons of gas are added. On my car the mileage resets automatically, but the avg. mpg does not, despite the fact that I have driven as much as 3.2 miles before resetting manually. I complained about this to the dealer. The dealer contacted Toyota California, who stated at first that on a 2006 the MFD mpg should not reset automatically, but after further internal consultation said that it should reset, and recommended that the entire module containing the MFD be replaced. This was done, but the mpg still does not reset automatically. I note in the prior posts on this issue that some 2006s reset automatically, but most do not. I agree with Paradox who stated that it would be odd if Toyota incorporated contrary responses into the same function on different cars. My question is, has anyone whose mpg did not reset automatically had this corrected, and if so, what was the fix? Red Baron
I own a 2006 as well. If you do not manually reset it the MPG will act like a lifetime average. If you DO reset it then you have a per tank average MPG. (no matter what the manual says) Cheers

I believe that to be true. The 05 and 06 do react differently with regard to the reset button on that screen.
This is an interesting issue. On my '06, I always get at least 5+ gallons on each fill-up, and sometimes it resets (both the miles driven AND the average MPG) on its own once I start driving, and other times I have to manually reset it even after driving a mile or so after the fill-up. It seems to be very inconsistent.
I have an 06 built in 06. At first it did not reset after a fill up. I liked that. Then after a few months it did start resetting after each fill up.

Each of the 6 tanks I've purchased has been about 9 gallons. I have manually reset it every time, so I don't know if it does it automatically or not. I'm used to doing it manually and will continue to do so. I've got my lifetime average figured in a spreadsheet, and I like seeing how each tank goes.
The action is different with the older models. On the 2005 it will automatically reset. With the newer models, the miles will automatically reset, but not the mileage. If you want the mileage on a per tanks basis, you have to manually hit the reset after a fill up. Tom
