Hello, My daughter in law just bought a new 2017 Prius. (the non-plug in one) Want to replace her oem tires with a good all-weather type like the Nokian WRG3. a. Anyone have any opinions on the Nokian WRG3 ? Noisy ? (if so, which thread type and tire size do you have, please ?) b. A technical question: For the same tire size, and same everything else, are "Directional" thread tires more noisy than the "Asymmetrical" thread type ? Why ? BTW: New Forum user. I had these on my Mustang and they were great tires: Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 You can search around on the tire rack website for all season tires, the more popular tires have reviews on things like wet weather traction, dry traction, and snow/ice performance.
Just thinking about all your questions, and I know you mean well, but maybe you need to give her a little breathing room? I'm not sure; don't know your situation obviously, feel free to ignore this. Anyway: The WRG3 are supposed to be improved over the WRG2, for rolling resistance, civility. I had the latter, used them on separate rims for winter only, and couldn't wait to get them off in spring. They were somewhat truck-like, had a "song" at higher speed, and did impact mpg moderately. What area is your daughter-in-law in: from your other questions I glean it's not Boston. The all-seasons the car came with might be fine for the first winter. The bees knees for winter snow traction is a second set of tires, dedicated snow tires, on something like Corolla steel rims, say Michelin X-Ice.
Nokian are great winter tires. They call them all season, but that's if you live in the Netherlands. If your daughter in law wants a set get some winter rims.
Is Boston as cold and snowy as Buffalo in winter? My ol'buddy from there back along told me the snow could almost reach the tops of the street lamps! I've no way of knowing whether that was exaggeration.
