I have a volt and this car and I was wondering if I can use the same charger that came with the volt in the prius? I used the adapter conversion L1->L2-like level charging which raises the voltage to 240v but a lower amp on the volt. If I can use it on the prius it would let me charge quicker. I heard the volt charger is actually a clipper creek charger that can do 240v, and clipper creeks are found in many public stations so I would think I can use it in my prius. Is that correct?
As I recall with the Gen I PiP, there was no problem using any but the very first version of the Volt EVSE. The very first version did not play by the J1772 protocol quite right, but they fixed the problem in subsequent versions. As I understand it, at least the 2016 or newer Volt EVSE is electrically capable of dealing with 240V input, so all you need is an adapter for the wall plug. Don't try that with the Prime EVSE, unless you want to have an expensive fireworks display. If it is like the GEN I PiP EVSE, the internal components are not rated for 240V!. You won't quite get as fast charging as with a "real" 240V EVSE charger, since the Volt EVSE, being a 120V unit, will only advertise 12 Amp capacity to the charger in the car.
I have done it for the last month -2017 Volt standard charger on a 2017 Prius Prime - no problem - can do a full charge in 2hours and 30min
There should not be any problem with using any kind of J1772 EVSE with a Prime. Volt, Leaf, whatever. Standards, and all that.
