    Long term use of chemical cleaning sprays appear to be the cause of significant damage to womens' respiratory tracts, similar to that seen in smokers.

    Science Says Men Should Be The Ones Cleaning The House

    Most cleaning can be done with just a few inexpensive things that do the job well: baking soda (mild abrasive), isopropyl alcohol (degreaser/mild solvent), hydrogen peroxide (mild bleach), Dawn dish soap. Go to the dollar store if you need spray bottles to make solutions.

    For the tougher jobs: Bon Ami is a stronger abrasive, yet still gentle, Oxy Clean is a more concentrated non-chlorine bleach. Orange/citrus oil-based cleaners are helpful to get stains out of things stainless steel coffee mugs, remove stickers and permanent marker stains. Biz is an enzyme laundry additive that helps get grease, oil, blood, food stains, grass stains, etc. out of clothes.

    Save some money and avoid breathing in nasty things that can make you sick. Disclaimer: I have asthma, and wouldn't wish COPD on my worst enemy. It's a horrible death.

    Great start to a household chemistry thread.

    Chewing gum in hair -> peanut butter.
    Skunk spray -> tomato juice.
    ...

    Don't eat Tide pods.

    Well thar you go. Sodium bicarbonate + hydrogen peroxide is similar to OxiClean chemistry.

    Because we don't clean anything with gasoline any more (right guys ? :) ), I guess the most dangerous household chemical is paint stripper.

    Some of the usual suspects in household cleaners also contribute significantly to pollution, in addition to being harmful to us directly. It's not just our cars that emit nasty stuff.

    I'll add vinegar to the list of benign cleaning things - it works quite well in combination with baking soda, as it bubbles away. With hydrogen peroxide being cytotoxic, I'm not sure it's the safest cleanser. Defiinitely don't use it to clean a wound, because it will only kill the regenerating skin cells.

    I have family with asthma, and a friend who died of COPD - such a horrid way to go.
