The 1.2 turbo is to keep up with the european-masses-downsizing-mindset, and with that a bit more of work (profit) at the shop. It would be enough the 1.5 Estec, but then with no DI and turbocharging, servicing would be low, wouldn't it?

From september 2017 new car model are tested on WLTP, there is some transition period till september 2019 where all cars will be rated by new WLTP and RDE test cycle.

That said WLTP is still very optimistic on average, the test is estimated to add around 15% to a car’s emissions over the previous NEDC procedure.

New Corolla hatchback with new 2.0 engine and CVT with launch gear (simulating 10 speed auto) will be on sale in US in summer 2018 that is before Europe, sadly there is no word about Hybrid:

How about a Hybrid to replace the Prius c? I suspect it would sell better with the Corolla branding behind it.

 

Is the North American/Chinese Corolla and global Auris being consolidated into one model?

It will be a Yaris hybrid since it is already smaller than the Corolla. Toyota could choose to keep the Prius c name, or use something else, here.

 

What is of interest is the increase in the CR of the hybrid(13), as compared to the conventional 2.0L engine (13).

I'm still thinking how the hybrid can be compared to its conventional counterpart, in a race. Appears the hybrid 2.0 might do well.

The expansion stroke of the non-hybrid is 13:1, of the hybrid engine is 14:1. The compression stroke is likely the same on both, with the hybrid having later valve closing. The difference in expansion stroke drops the hybrid to 107 kw (143 hp) versus 126 kw (169 hp) in the engine for non-hybrids. Really I could see them dropping the 13:1 compression engine in hybrids as well as difference in peak efficiency is only 1%, and both are more efficient than the engine in my gen III prius.

 

Or the Corolla hybrid will be the sedan.

 

Yeah, they could drop the CR, but y even going that route, if they'd drop the CR in some years or time to come.

 

It would be great to see the hybrid implemented in a corolla. But I don't think that would sell much, because lots of folks prefer the conventional corollas with their fascinating MPG.

In my view, that might stymie corollas market share somehow.

I find it hard to believe "You can have any color of Model A as long as it is black" works today.

The issue in the US is our cheap fuel. A full hybrid system is adding $2000 or more to the car's price tag. Most buyers aren't going to care enough to pay extra for lower emissions, so they are just going to look at fuel savings. With the ICE model getting close to 40mpg already, they will decide to save their money and skip the hybrid.

We've seen this repeatedly with the other hybrid models with an ICE twin. The hybrid making up 10% of the ICE sales seems to be the norm. Enough Corollas are sold to make having a hybrid version worthwhile though. Corolla sales won't be hurt beyond the current market shift to SUVs, but a hybrid model will further hurt the Prius.
