Happy birthday to my Prime! I received it on 4/14/17, first driving it on 4/15/17 (I got it late in the day). I kept detailed records of the information the car reported each day on the Drive Monitor. I live at 5,340 feet of altitude and do a mix of city and highway driving that's probably close to 50/50. I live in the Denver Colorado metro area so this included a full Colorado winter driving season, though we had a pretty mild winter this year. Overall, this car is tremendously impressive! The car's summary: 5 miles/kWh = 168.5MPGe. I calculated (not measured) that I consumed 1,810kWh of electricity. I calculated that I used 78.2 gallons of gasoline. I actually bought 82.7 gallons of gasoline, but the tank is now more full than it was when I got the car. Summary: Days: 365 Driving days: 344 Ev-only days: 313 Hv days: 31 Days where I was not in my home town: 25 Out-of-town days that were all Ev: 1 Of the 7 remaining days where I used Hv but was in town: Forgot to plug in or set the car to charge: 3 (all three were when the car was new and I was getting used to it). Insufficient range: 4 Interestingly, I recorded how much I was short on the four days with insufficient range. They were 32, 32, 25 and 25 miles. The duplication is a coincidence since they were all different destinations. This means I would probably have been short all four days in a Volt as well! Of the 24 out-of-town, mostly Hv days, there were 18 days when I was traveling between towns. On those 18 days, I traveled: 100-200 miles: 11 days 200-300 miles: 4 days 300-400 miles: 0 days 400-500 miles: 2 days 500-600 miles: 0 days Over 600 miles: 1 day Of the three trips I took, 2 could have been done in a 300 mile BEV, both with substantial (multi-hour) delays. 1 trip could not have been done at all. Of the 8 major travel legs I took on those trips, 1 could have been completed without significant delay, 1 with a minor delay, 4 with a major delay and 2 not at all. Analysis of the daily data is below.
Very impressive and detailed summary! This confirms my suspicion that the "25 mile electric range" is a somewhat conservative estimate as you were usually above that, particularly in warmer temperatures. Do you intentionally drive to get the best efficiency you can? (AKA hypermiling, but I consider hypermiling to be more extreme that what I typically do) I LOL'd at the 171.0 MPG readout. Does that take into account the electricity use somehow, or is it purely miles traveled per gallons of gas used? I'd love to get one of these, but right now can't/don't want to afford one. Maybe in a few years once I get tired of my 2010....
I drive the speed limit, usually with cruise control. I rarely do anything special to get better mileage. That's total miles driven divided by gallons of gas used so, yes, it doesn't include the energy consumed by battery charging.
