When I start the car i get a whining sound which seems to be coming from the electric motor cooling area. The sound does not go away, only gets a tad quieter when the engine rpms fall. Transaxle gear position does not affect the sound. I also have a couple of codes. P0171-Bank 1 system Too lean P0A80- Replace Hybrid Battery Pack P3021-Battery Block 11 become weak ABS codes C1259- HV System Regenerative Malfunction C1310-Malfunction in HV System.
Welcome. You had me going there for a bit since you put this in the Gen 1 Plug In forum. Then I saw that you have an '05. Totally different beast. I suggest clicking the "Report" button and asking a moderator to move it to the right forum so other Gen 2 owners will see it. I don't think they come to this forum much. But, the gist of it is that your hybrid battery has at least one bad block. Best fix is a new battery, but if you have lots of miles on this car, that might not be the best use of your money. A little less expensive and a little less long lasting would be a used battery from a totaled Prius. The newer, the better. Third option would be a rebuilt battery, but you will be disappointed with that one since they seem to usually only last a few months.
The engine originally had about a 230K miles on it and had a rod knock. I replaced the engine with the transaxle altogether since its easier. After filling everything up, antifreeze, oil, dot 3, I started the car everything was fine until I checked the oil, It was milky. The water either got in throught the drain plug because the drain plug was loose or i dont know. Definetly not ran for a long time with bad engine oil mixed with water because when I took the valve cover off I didn't see any milky film or anything like that. It was already getting late so I closed up the shop and went home. The next morning I cleaned the crancase a lil bit with shop towels put everything on and poured in napa sythetic oil(Synthetic oil was all I had, I got it for $1 a quart from my napa, they were doing a huge sale), started her up and about 5 seconds later the whine came up. I thought it was a vaccum leak but it wasn't their last night and it sounds more like its coming from the bottom. Also since transaxle was a little bit low on atf I added a bit. Whats the proper way to fill atf? Do I need a special tool or temp check or can I just fill until it comes out from the check hole? About the forum I originally had it under 2nd gen Maintanance and throubleshooting, then one of the moderators moved it up here, dont know why? Maybe got confused?
Welcome to PriusChat!! How many miles? What device are you using to read those codes? Where in California are you located?
When the car is in park, what disengages the transaxle from the engine. Is it a chain or what? What could be making the noise while the car is in park? Or does nothing spin inside the trans while its in park?
Nothing special needed. On a flat/level surface, drain and fill until it weeps out the fill hole -about 4 quarts of Toyota WS fluid. Are you using something else? Not sure if that Actron U-scan tool is fully compatible with a prius, it may only read some generic DTCs and it may or not offer any INFs.
When the car is in Park, the parking pawl engages one of the slots on the ring gear and that keeps the output shaft from spinning. The input will spin if the gas engine (ICE) is idling because it hasn't completed its warmup. Normally, the engine wouldn't run when the car is stopped. Edit to add: And, if the engine is off in park, neither MG1 or MG2 would spin either.
What about when the engine is started and its in park, doesn't something keep on spinning to charge the battery? Can Napa 5w-30 synthetic oil be the problem? Say if it's to thin.
My 2005 started doing this whining Saturday Morning on a 20 mile drive. I didn’t notice on the return trip, I thought it was because A/C Fan was on high. Yesterday It had a problem and stopped. I assumed the whine was from MG 1 the smaller of the two motors, the high torque motor also used to start the engine, because the whine corresponded to the start of the ICE and its RPM and not the speed of the vehicle, continuing even in Park. MG2 would also spin though much slower to my way of thinking about the Continuously Variable Transmission. How has yours worked out? iPhone ?
The trans has an oil pump its mounted on the end side of the trans on the drivers side. It also has a filter screen but it is not replaceable. Both are not serviceable and require removal the the trans to get to them. This post is kinda confusing as it seems the new donor motor had a blown head gasket with the milky oil. Only one place where engine oil and coolant can mix. Plus you have a bad hybrid battery. The whine is probably coming from the inverter as you have a C1310 and it will not be happy. Is this your first prius repair?
I dove in and swapped out with a spare transaxel Ed. I Made a separate post about it called DIY transaxel swap. Having trouble with some new codes would love your opinion on it. iPhone ?
