Someone on the street hit my mirror and the glass is shattered - luckily the rest of it is intact. I suspect its a heated glass because I have a premium feature in my 2006 Prius with rear view defrost, etc. Can I replace with a non-heated glass and just not connect the wires? Amazon sells the glass and kit for $14, Auto Body shop wants $90 Thanks!
Being you're in Boston, you should look for a heated mirror. Whenever your defroster is turned on, the heated function is turned on in the mirror. You should be able to find used mirrors on Ebay or junk yards fairly easily. Members here might even have them. I would think they wouldn't be more than $25
Ideally yes defrost would be great but I hardly drive in the winter. I just want to know if it will kill the car to put a non-heated mirror in there
It seems they don't sell the heated glass seperately, and the whole assembley must be replaced. I've seen used ones on Ebay that are $40, i think I'll jut suck it up and pay someone to do it to save me some time, not much savings there.
$40 probably is the whole mirror assembly. It's much easier to install that way. Just have to remove the color match cover on your mirror and snap into the new mirror assembly
04 05 06 07 08 09 Toyota Prius LH Driver Side Heated Mirror OEM Left Glass | eBay No, it's this part that is needed. It's just a pricey part.
If i were to try to do it myself, are there instructions on how to do it? i don't see any on YouTube. It seem slike you just use a screwdriver to pry it off and plug and play from other car manufacturers.
I don't know how to remove just the mirror and reinstall a new mirror. I've done the entire mirror assembly before, which is quite easy. 1. remove door panel (this might not be necessary but I did it) 2. remove the tweeter cover from door 3. remove the bolts holding the mirror assembly 4. remove and replace with new mirror assembly.
It doesn't take much time at all... Simply go to a junk yard that lets you pull off your own parts and learn to remove one after watching some you tube videos. Don't worry about matching paint color, that's just a plastic cover, so you can use the one from your old car... This is a super easy fix, less than an hour. Only will cost maybe $20 depending on the junk yard you go to...
Thanks guys. I did end up going to a few junk yards. They said prius mirrors go quick and they had none. I also don't really have space or time to take apart a door, etc. I was hoping it was going to be paste on glass but alas nothing is simple or cheap.
I decided to buy the non-heated glass and replace the glass only. It was $14 and it would be delivered tomorrow and I could just do it myself. Mirror won't be heated but I asked a few friends and they don't have heated mirrors and said it's just fine without it. If it fails then I'll have more time to figure out a longer term solution!
Oh and also someone have advice on what to do with the electrical tape and the heater connections? Do I just cover the ends with the tape?
You can replace the mirror glass 20 times in the time you'd spend unbolting the whole mirror assembly from the door, etc. You aim the mirror upward so you can get your tool behind the bottom edge, pop it toward you off the two clips, slide it toward you and down so the two top clips come loose, slide the new glass up into the top and snap the bottom edge into place. -Chap
Exactly! How do you know which wire goes into which port? Or does it matter? And you can replace it 200X over by buying one of the glasses replacement kits on Amazon and paste the new glass over the old glass and pay $12
