Is it possible to remove the front passenger seat? Is it just a few bolts? I have to transport my bicycle and it has an extremely long wheelbase ( its a recumbent). I basically need the full length of the interior compartment to accommodate it. Thanks.
You can't fold the front seat forward any more than 90 degrees straight up. That's the furthest it goes forward, its ridiculous.
Have you tried this: remove the front and rear headrests, slide the front passenger seat all the way forward and then fully recline backward. Then fold the rear seat back. The reason I suggest this is that properly removing and reinstalling the front passenger seat on US models can be a hassle, not to mention potentially unsafe in a collision. The front passenger seat is held by four bolts, and has two or three wire harness connectors. However, the seat is equipped with an Occupant Classification System (OCS) ECU that communicates with the Airbag system. The seat also has the seat cushion switch, seat belt buckle sensor, four weight sensors in the seat frame, the seat cushion airbag, and the side airbag. Turning the vehicle on while the seat is disconnected will set diagnostic trouble codes in the airbag ECU that may prevent normal operation of the airbag in the event of a collision, and will need to be cleared after reinstalling the seat. Zero-calibration of the OCS system is required each time the seat is removed and reinstalled.
Yeah ok no way am I removing the front seat just for my stupid bicycle then. But you bring up a good idea about folding the front seat back and taking off the headrest (which I can do since I have a C2). That might provide sufficient enough room to get the bike in there on its side. I'll try to cram it in there and take a photo to share with ya'll! Thanks!
As mentioned above, the seats fold backwards not forwards to get flat. I know of no seat that folds forwards in the front... Take the headrest off, and fold it backwards, the whole thing gets flat.
Ever think about getting a tow hitch? I tow a trailer with my GEN 2 Prius it gets just 20 mpg towing interstate 70 mph but locally I get 38 mpg with the 5X8V nose cargo trailer. I have a cargo rack I can use to carry small stuff like fuel cans. The most I carried was 35 gallons on the rear. Have not tried it but I figured I could drive from Pacific Ocean to Atlantic Ocean and buy fuel one time. UPDATE 4/15/2016 I purchased a micro camper RUNAWAY is the brand name 4'x8'x36" it is basically a bed on wheels with climate control. I get 30 mpg towing 60 mph ideal conditions. My plan is to put a tow hitch on the Prius V we just purchased and we will have 2 cars towing should we have a need to evacuate in the future I want to have our valuables and a way to be comfortable should we need to start from scratch. I believe we should have all we need once I get the V with a hitch. I can carry 35 gallons of fuel on the cargo hitch to the rear of the micro camper this should be more than enough to make it through any disaster if we use fuel for sleeping only. We have screen enclosures, shower tent, and dome tents with cots to provide additional support but the main thing is having AC for sleeping.
You seem to know exactly what I'm looking for, took out all 4 bolts, but have not disconnected the wire harnesses yet. I won't reinstall the front seat after I've taken it out. It's so much more roomy, done that to my old aveo and it was great! Where can I get the airbag system recalibrated without the seat in place to keep the system intakt and working? Thank you!
In California millions and millions of tax dollars are being spend on bicycle paths. You are not suppose to own a car or god forbid transport a bicycle with a car. Ride the bicycle as Calif coalitions and PACS imply that thousands of people ride from Santa Rosa to San Francisco (100 miles) everyday. Hence, for many reasons they say it is better for society to spend millions on paths and not on fixing potholes. Some sarcasms....but I want lower taxes. Have fun anyway and a tow hitch with rack will be a solid solution leaving the interior for any riding buddies.
Sorry to bring back an old topic. I am interested in reversing the front passenger seat to make it face the back, or removing it and adding a different seat turned around. Is it possible to reverse the seat without removing the wiring to prevent any codes/alarms? I am doing this for car camping purposes, I realize it won't bolt in backwards so I would have to leave it not connected to the car/not to be used by anyone while driving. I would like a rear facing seat for convenience and comfort.
I can't stress how terrible of an idea this is. For camping, if you slid the seat all the way forwards and recline it down, it makes a perfect lie flat surface. If I were silly enough to attempt what you want to do, I'd look into some of those minivan bucket seats that can swivel to the back. They'd at least be engineered to survive a crash if properly welded/bolted to the frame and have the functionality you want.
Bringing this one back again, as I’ve been looking for ways to rig a lie flat bed. The Prius C front seats do NOT recline flat, or even close to it. There’s about a 4-5 inch height diff between the seat back (w headrest removes) and the top of the folded rear seat. For comparison, both the old Toyota Matrix and gen 1 Scion XB seats do recline flat. I have not gotten hold of one to compare size and bolt patterns, though. My alternative is also to remove the seat completely, or make de-extenders to bring the seat farther forward than normal.
I just confirmed jscoot's comment. I just tried it on my 2018 Prius C. The only thing I can think of to make it as flat as possible is to put a lot of blankets or something that would fill in that 5" height difference.
