Can anyone help my Prius broke down this evening on my way home from work I pulled out of a junction and then heard a bang and lost all drive managed to get over to the side of the road every time I put it in drive or reverse I get the traction control light on and you hear like something is spinning hope it’s nothing to serious any ideas ?
Does the dashboard show any error messages or symbols? Is the Check Engine light on, to indicate some diagnostic codes to be read?
No engine codes or warning lights just traction control light flashes if u push the accelerator pedal
CVT belt? Whatever it is you are going to need a place to fix it. Like possibly changing out the transmission kind of place.
You never opened the hood? Loud bang and no codes means it’s strictly mechanical. Maybe the chain in the trans snapped. That makes a rizzing sound when you push the gas pedal. Or diff section failed. Pretty rare. Less rare is piston rod through the side of the block because the engine was run dry of oil. Whatever it is it’s fatal and serious. How many miles.
Yeh I’m always checking under the hood checking fluids and oil and all been okay only 80,000 on the clock
Sounds like something broke loose between the engine and the front wheels. I didn't see any mention yet of CV joints. They usually give warning noises before failing completely though. But that would fit the symptoms you described.
In Hondas I would say broken axle. But it's hard to guess remotely what the bang sounded like. So it makes it hard to diagnose remotely.
Well update from Toyota it is indeed the drive shaft has gone but who ever has changed it before fitted an aftermarket one which is why it has lasted So it’s a big bill :-(
Hopefully its not an inner shaft they tend to really beat up the differential gear when they fail catastrophically. Find out if its an inner or outer. If an inner I would get the inner shaft /diff seals replaced also. A leak there and you never know will kill your trans.
