At over 500,000 I’ve replaced the big things though for $300 instead of OEM $1900

    IMG_6424.jpg I removed the mid section and varied it to a welder and pointed to what I wanted and he was able to charge me only $40 to replace it. Then back home and installed it lifting the rear section up 4” because it says as the car ages

    Paul, when did you change your struts and if so what kind? I'm at 111742 and very worried about the struts :)

    Interesting welding excercise: looks like the original pipe is canting upwards a bit at the Cat. Did the welder manage to stay pretty close to the original angles and length? Employ any tricks?

    Or maybe I'm overthinking it, lol.

    500K miles is pretty stupendous btw.

    I had the front ones done at 200,000 really made a difference. OEM
    The rear ones I did at 397,000 ordered the spring strut combo replacing them when I had taken the battery out. Easy

    I layed it out on his table and measured up from the end to get it right.
    He tacked it in place so I could make adjustment before he sealed it up.

    I did the front at 270,000 and the rear at 397,00 should have been sooner if I knew I could order strut spring combo units I could change myself would have saved a set of tires.

    since your in California and the ombudsman considered that an improvement can you give us the model number for that cat? Magnaflow right? can you dig up the model number I think more than one person here needs one.

    Technically ? he got it approved somehow there must be a way. Although I am still fuzzy on the exact steps. we could use some walk through advice here.

    But here...

    Catalytic Converter-2.50in. Universal California OBDII Rear Right Magnaflow CA | eBay

    Exact steps......

    purchase replacement cat
    remove exhaust pipe with cat from car
    take both items to local welding shop
    a good welder/fabricator could swap the cat and maintain exact fitment/angles/etc pretty easily
    pay the man
    take newly repaired exhaust pipe home and install it in the car
    sell the old cat for 200 bucks and come out even on the deal.............

    I believe you are technically right. Because the emission equipment is technically designed to last the life of the car. Though with 570,000 miles the car has technically died.
    The resuscitation requires slightly more catalyst than was originally provided. This does the job.
