I just notice that my 2014 3rd gen Prius starts to shakes after I start engine. but will disappear less in a minute. any advice what is needed? Thanks
Let start with how many miles is on your Prius. What maintenance have you done on your Prius. Do you have a check engine light. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
Egr valve? I reported hearing engine rattle on cold starts to my dealership when I was there for some recalls, and they changed my egr valve I believe.
This has happened to my 2010 once after being left in the cold for several days with no use last yeat. Throttling the gas gently eliminated the problem. I've never seen it again. I live in Texas and drive almost every day, it almost never gets cold here so I've never seen that problem reoccur. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
One approach to eliminating that knock is cleaning all parts of the EGR system, which tend to clog, and then installing an “oil catch can” to catch crankcase combustion vapors and condensates which may be causing the knock on start up.
And clean out the intake manifold too, in conjunction with the Oil Catch Can install. It's on the receiving end of the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) circuit, and the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) circuit. The former will result in a oil/water/gas swimming pool directly below the throttle body, and the latter will clog up the EGR capilaries running through the intake manifold to each port, and carbon up the ports as well. Clean the throttle body while you're at it. Watch @NutzAboutBolts videos on all these subject, pinned at top of third gen maintenance forum. Next start-up after doing that, is the one time I got that knock, there seems to be a connection. I'll take advantage of the 15 seconds of EV the third gen has, if I need to move the car to the driveway, for example. I keep my moves to 10 seconds max, counting in my head. Shut down, repeat as needed. If I blow it, it starts up, I let it run till shuts off by itself. Never had a full brake inspection? Seems like a time-honoured American thing?
That doesn't necessarily prevent the issue. I had not done that the one time mine exhibited the shaking routine upon start-up.
