I don't know if it's bad to leave your car plug into your home charger. I live in Upstate New York and in it snows and it's very cold. My car plug-in for 256 hours. The reason is that I had a stent with pneumonia and I've been in the hospital for a while. I've noticed on my chargepoint app that it charges the car a little bit from time to time. Even though it's fully charged. I'm guessing it's doing that to heat up the batteries because the temperature is getting way below 10 degrees. Also I'm guessing this also helps the onboard 12 volt battery. Has anybody left their car on charge for long time? It's not like it's charging it only comes on when the car needs to heat the battery. I'll keep you guys up to date when I get out of hospital and turn the car on. Most likely I would run it on an HV mode 1st to get the engine up and running. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
As long as it’s not for more than a month (since you don’t want to leave the Prime fully charged for that long) but for short to medium term, that’s ok.
I was thinking the traction battery warmer but that’s only available in Alaska and Canada. (That begins after the 3rd day when the traction battery heater stops and will continue to warm the battery until the 31st day after you plugged in). The other reason is Toyota recommends leaving the Prime in the HV battery state rather than a full charge of leaving in storage or going on a long vacation. It’s in the manual somewhere.
I believe that Li-Ion batteries prefer to be stored at around 50%-60% charge if it is 'long term,' and this applies across the board to all lithium ion tech in consumer products. I suspect Toyota determines that this 'long term' frame of time is a month, which seems a little short to me but then again my laptop battery is a wee bit smaller than the traction battery...
