Hi Guys: This is a 2013 Prius C w/72,000 miles. It just quit and gave the Hybrid system failure screen along with all the lights. But there are no OBD11 codes. I'm sure the code reader is good and have used it many times on other cars. I bought a new yellow top battery and that did not help. I called the dealer today to see if it would be covered under warranty and they said "we can't tell until you get it here". Please the dealer is 60 miles away. Is there any way I can diagnose it before pulling it to the dealer? I don't mind buying tools since I have another Prius C and want to keep on buying them. Thx, Dale
Check your 12 V battery. It likely is dead.......or nearly so. P.S. Are you aware that the C is being discontinued in the US......after a very limited number of 2020s delivered to dealers ?? Effectively the 2019 is the last year.
Most OBDII code readers can only read the federally-mandated stuff. A prius has much more to offer, and most code readers can't get at it. Some code readers can be updated with prius-specific stuff, but many cannot. Toyota Techstream on a laptop is the very best. You can get set up via ebay, especially cheap if you already have an old windows laptop lying around. You can also use certain phone apps- some know the Prius secret sauce.
With all you've described, very likely the code reader is deficient. I think that tow to the dealership is the best option. 2013 with low miles, even if you're out of warranty, Toyota might pitch in, if it's the inverter or hybrid battery. He did just replace it. I don't see a connection.
New batteries sometimes fail too. Especially if they weren't fully charged to begin with.......or if the charging system is not working. He said that he intends to keep buying (new) Cs. That might not be possible.
Hi Guys: Please note that I checked the new battery and it is good, I checked the OBDII it is good. I also disconnected the battery, to reset computer. I don't want to get a $200 tow if it's only to check codes. I will try to buy the Toyota Techstream if most here think it offers more than OBDII? Thx, Dale
Well I got her fixed! I took off the orange hybrid battery lock to check it for continuity & see if voltage was at the battery terminal. I then put it back on and the car went into "ready" mode! Does that means the lock was just loose? I this common? Thx, Dale
there are some decent readers like torque, but they still make a few mistakes. you have to have experience and knowledge. tech stream is toyota specific, you don't have to worry about misreads, but it is more of a hassle to set up.
From what I've read across PriusChat, I'd say yes - it's more common than one would think. Glad to see you got it going.
I don't think I've ever heard of one coming loose by itself. But I don't know whether or not it's possible to get it close enough to being latched for it to work for a while and then pop out. I'm just amazed that you thought to check it and that that was it. Glad it was an easy fix.
