 I picked up my 2006 Prius today and drove about 30 miles. In the diagram that indicates the remaining capacity of the battery in the ENERGY MONITOR display, the horizontal bars are never up to the top. I remember when I tested drive two other prius, these blue bars were all the way up. Could this mean a malfunction in the battery? is it not fully recharging? I have read the entire manual and I cannot find any info. Has anyone else had the same problem?
I rarely see all bars in my 2005. Mainly when I'm going down a long hill and not using "B." When it does happen, it drops a bit very quickly.
Normal. The battery will never be full, otherwise there is no place to put any brake regen energy. The only way to get 8 bars is driving downhill for quite some distance. Also, "full" on the display is no more than about 80% charge.
Yup. The batter on the screen is only a small range of the true state of charge (SOC) of the battery. It shows 40-80% charge, with no bars being 40% and 8 bars being 80% charge. It likes to stay at 60% (6 bars).
Hi.... I drive prius 2011 3rd Gen. Yesterday while driving I heard a bang sound and after that car was filled with smoke arising from battery pack.... I de-assembled the battery pack, cell number 20 got exploded, damaging 19 and 21. Cooling fan is working perfectly fine, All battery cells are showing 7.8 or 7.7.... The one got exploded is now at 6.4....i changed three cells now it's working fine but I am worried why it exploded at first instance.
Thanks for your reply, i bought it used, it was 45000 km once I bought it. Now it has completed 83000.
It sounds like it's just an instance of bad luck with a catastrophic failure of module 20. Did it occur during hard acceleration or hard braking? Those events can cause 100+ amps to flow through the battery.
Put me in the rarely camp also. I've only seen the battery bars all the way to the top on very long down hill climbs and even then it only stays there briefly.
