I have a 2012 Plug-In prius, but just discovered it has no spare tire. Not wanting to use the onboard tire repair can I would like to buy a wheel and tire. The User's Manual says the wheel is 15x6J, and my current tires are P185/65R15. When enquiring about wheels I have been asked if my car is an "advanced hybrid." Apparently that is more important than the above data. How do I determine if it is an "advanced hybrid?"
I really doubt it matters. If you're ok with a full size spare, get an extra Prius rim and a tire in 195/65R15. Or for utilitarian, a Corolla steel rim (p/n: 42611-02471) would be fine. Or any semi-compatible aftermarket rim, say through TireRack, with adapter rings for the hub. If you want to get a compact spare, look up the part number for 3rd gen temp spare rim at McGeorge Toyota Parts (for one), and you can get the temp spare tire spec from a third gen owner's manual (downloadable in the "manuals" section at Toyota Tech Info website). Just in case it doesn't go without saying: this spare will have to reside somewhere in the cabin, it's not going to fit under the hatch floor.
it doesn't matter. check salvage or eBay for a compact spare and tire. i think corolla and several others fit. there are some good threads here from back in the day for what people were using. i keep mine on the floor of the hatch
You can also check Craigslist . Any spare tire from a regular Prius works. I picked my spare up from a wrecked 2015. Just check the date code to ensure that the tire will be good to go for you.
I got a compact spare with rim on EBay. It was like new and cost about half what a new one would cost. Try searching for "16 17 18 19 TOYOTA PRIUS SPARE TIRE WHEEL DONUT 16" 5X100."
By the way, they were asking if you have a base or advanced PiP. It makes no difference at all. Both have the same wheels and tires. (Now that you have a PiP, welcome to the PHEV world!! Don't forget to update your profile. It helps when responders can see what we're talking about.)
Mine was $40. Thought that was a good deal. @The Critic was up in Sac when I found it and he completed the transaction for me. But they are out there.
I happened to have a (3rd gen) Prius Plug-In rolling beside me yesterday. I don't believe it was ever for sale in Canada, so a bit of a rarity; think it's the first I've ever seen in the flesh. Nice rims...
On the flip side of that I was at the dealer today for the 5k mile service on our Prime and saw the new Prius wheel covers. I’d make you cringe. But the PIP rims in the shrine are lookin better by the day.
I [also] have a 2012 Plug-in Advanced. Some things that I believe the Advanced has that the Base does not— headlight washers, heads-up display, dynamic radar cruise control, larger higher def screen, more radio option buttons....
Some tire shops unfortunately put on the 185’s. @Pedal Logic currently has 185’s on his 2010 and there is definite early wear .
