PLEASE HELP!!! I have a 2012 Prius Plug-In Advanced (now called the Prime)... I've only done 3 oil changes... one for each 100,000 miles... no other maintenance done Now I have Cylinder Misfire and changed Coils, Plugs, and Injectors... doesn't fix issue. So mechanic says I need to rebuild engine or new engine... seems a bit much!!! Codes I'm getting: P0300 P0301 P0304 P219A It mainly rattles when I barely press on gas peddle (like in heavy stop & go traffic). Thank you, Y.W.
If you've done oil changes every 100,000 miles, then you have an issue. A common problem at high mileage is a blown head gasket. So that's probably what you have. Do a compression check
AFAIK, it's only comparatively recently that any manufacturer has claimed that its oil is good for even 10,000 miles (and I'd be reluctant to change my oil that infrequently). Is that what you meant? You inadvertently added a zero? If you really did change the oil only at 100,000-mile intervals, I'm surprised that it's even running at all.
Name was never changed, it's still a 2012 Prius plug-in model. Oil changed every 100,000 miles and still running, this is a prius chat record as far as I know.
Blown head gasket is very possible... how much something like that cost? I did look at Engines & Transmission on eBay and they seem fairly priced. My only concern is that many (not all) are from Japan that promise to have 40k-60k miles. I'm looking at an engine for around $1150 and Transmission for around $300... plus installation PLEASE ADVICE!!!
you don't need a new transaxle, just need to fix the head gasket (if that's confirmed to be the problem)
I know I don't need another Transmission (transaxle), but since it has 310k miles and if I'm already removing engine and paying for that labor I figure I should just put the matching 40k-60k mi. Trans that went with the Engine. - Then I can change shocks & struts and a "new-ish" car is what I'll have... or best possible for Lyft/Uber
This is what I told him on the thread he hijacked on the v side.... 310k mile in 2 1/2 years. That is 339.72 miles per day for 912.5 days. At normal intervals (10k miles)the car needed an oil change every 29.435 DAYS. You changed the oil only 3 times. I, even after knowing my replacement engine that I put in had around 12k miles on it, get nervous exceeding 5k miles on my oil change by more then a couple hundred miles. Yet you changed the oil around day 304.16 or so. At any rate, going purely by miles, the engine is past the “average” head gasket/oil consumption mileage window of 150k miles by 2x. I would search on Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market . That’s where I found the replacement engine I installed. You can sort by price, miles, or distance from you. And the prices are just as good, if not better then eBay. Especially if you can go pick up the engine in person. My final thought on this. After you do replace the engine. Please stop abusing your Prius and change the oil at the recommended interval!!
i mean, if you can go 300k in a gen3 engine with 3 oil changes and no other major maintenance? maybe he's on to something?
Maybe Toyota imbued the vehicle with car spirits that keep it running long past the point that it should?
Someone here went a bit over 20k miles before changing oil filter, due to problems breaking it loose. It looked pretty bad...
@The Critic has an Infiniti engine that was run for 40-50 k miles and the oil wasn’t changed. Guess what happened to that. I just hope the replacement engine for that FX is treated better.
OP, in the V thread you said you bought this car 2.5 years ago. That is about when I bought mine and I was happy to find one with only 39,000 miles. It sounds like you got yours with only 10,000 mile on it. Nice find! You also say in the other thread that you've never owned a car long enough to need to replace the brakes or tires. I went almost 200k in my Gen2 before needing to replace the brakes, Congrats to you on going 300k. My PIP now has 67k miles on it and the original tires are coming to an end. I'd be glad to know which tires you ran for 300k since I'm definitely interested in going that route, as long as they are LRR.
I got it with 22k miles on it. I used Pirelli P4 Plus... but sorry forgot to mention it, but that is the one thing I replaced twice... I got about 90-120k miles on tires
I do see that the P4 Plus are warrantied for 90k, so your 90 to 120k is very good. I currently have 68k on my '12 PIP and the original tires are approaching their end, although about 8k of these miles were on Michelin X-Ice.
